Week of March 2, 2020

     This week the children will be reading the story "Diary of a Wombat".  They will be going to TPAC  on Tuesday, March 3rd.  All children are invited to attend.  However, if your child has incomplete work,  failing grade, or has received two codes from February 18th thru March 2nd they will not be allowed to attend. 
       We will be celebrating Dr. Suess's birthday this week.  If you are interested in coming to our class to read a Dr. Suess book please contact us to schedule a time.  
        This week the children will be working on the following skills:
  • Identifying, decoding, and reading words with /ou/ and /ow/.
  • Reading stories and identifying the problem and solution within the story.
  • The children will continue to learn about the state of Tennessee.
  • The children will continue to work on learning about the Solar System. 
  • The children will working with comparing adjectives by using er and est.
  • Work on phoneme substitution.
  • Read and discuss the weekly Bible story "The People Bring Gifts to Make the Tabernacle" Exodus 35:4 - 36:7
  • Addition/Subtraction of two digit numbers.
  • Continue working with addition/subtraction of two digit numbers.
IT IS STRONGLY SUGGESTED THAT YOUR CHILD STUDY THEIR ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION NUMBER FACTS DAILY.

       Thanks to all the parents that came to the Living Museum on Friday.  The children did an excellent job on their presentation and they looked great! 
      This week the children will be working on the following skills.

  • Identifying, decoding, and reading words with /or/, /ore/, and /oar/.
  • Identify Adjectives
  • Write a narrative using adjectives.
  • Reading biographies about Thomas Edison and other inventors
  • Identify the problem and solution within a story.
  • The children will be reading the Bible story of "God Sends From the Heavens".
  • This weeks Bible verse will be "I will rain bread from Heaven for you." Exodus 16:4
  • The children will begin a unit of study on the state of Tennessee
  • The children will begin a unit of study in science on magnets.

WEEKLY OF February 17, 2020

      This week will be extremely busy as we prepare for the African American Living Museum and program.  It will be on Friday at 1:00.  Parents are invited to come and visit.  Your child should dress as their famous African American.  If you need help with getting something for your child to wear please contact us. Your child should bring their costume to school in a bag or on a hanger with their name on it.  We will assist your child with putting it on.
       This week we will be working on the following skills:
  • Reviewing addition and subtraction
  • Identifying thing planets
  •  Identifying and using adjectives in their writing
  • Identify, decode, and read words with /ir/, /er/, /ur/
  • Identifying cause and effects within a story.
  • Make prediction and confirm the outcome of a story.

  • Read about Moses and the Red Sea and the Ten Commandments.

      We hope that you all of you had a fun and safe snow day.  We feel that we all needed a day of rest.  This week the children will start where we left off on Thursday.  The children will have their reading, Bible, and spelling test on Monday.  
       The children will work on the following skills this week:
  • Identify, decode, and read words with /ar/ sound in them.
  • Continue to work on syllabication of words
  • Continue to work on capitalizing proper nouns
  • Identify point of view within a story.
  • Continue to retell and rewrite stories in sequence.
  • Continue to work on identifying the the main idea and key details of a story.
  • Continue to work on learning about famous African American
  • Read and discuss famous Presidents of the United State
  • Identify Symbols of the United States
  • Work on writing narratives about your child's African American that they will be on February 21st.

Week of February 3, 2020

       The children enjoyed celebrating 100 Days of School.  They will continue to celebrate 100 Days of School on Monday.  There were several activities they did not get to complete.  The children will begin working on their African American presentation this week.  The children will be part of a living museum on February 21st. This information will be sent home on Monday.

AFRICAN AMERICAN PRESENTATION
  
       Your child will need to choose a famous African American and write three details about who they chose.  Your child may choose a person we have or will discuss in class or choose an African American that is not on the list.  They will need to dress like their famous African American and tell about them at the presentation.  The presentation will be on Friday, February 21st at 1:00.   The entire lower school will participate in this presentation.  Information will be sent home on Monday.  Your child will need to choose their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, chose of who they would like to be.  This will need to be returned to school on Tuesday. February 4th.  Then your child will be giving a worksheet that they will write the information about their famous African American.  

The children will work on the following skills this week:
  • Identifying, decoding, and reading words with /ey/,/e/
  • Identify, read, and use high frequency words in their writing. (found, hard, near, woman, would, write, laugh)
  • Identify adverbs and use them in their writing and speaking correctly.
  • Read a story and retell and rewrite the story in sequence.
  • Review compound words.
  • Put words in ABC order.
  • Continue to work on phoneme Categorization
  • Work on editing skills
  • Addition of three numbers
  • Continue to work on writing using good letter formation and spacing.
  • Learn about the proper way to take care of their teeth. (dental health)
  • Continue to read and discuss famous African Americans
  • Read and discuss the Bible story "Moses Leads the People out of Egypt"
