Week of May 2, 2016



 This week the children will work on the following skills.


  • The children will decode, identify, and read words with / kn/, /gn/, and /wr/.
  • The children will read the story "Jack and the Beanstalk".
  • The children will continue to retell and rewrite stories in sequence, identify the main idea of a story, and identify details within a story.
  • The children will compare and contrast different version of the story "Jack and the Beanstalk" by using a Venn Diagram"
  • The children will identify and the author's purpose for writing a story.
  • The children will discuss and write about their mothers.
  • The children will continue to review word problems, addition and subtract facts, using tally marks, and interpreting data on a graph.
  • The child will identity the parts and functions of a natural system--the pollination system.
  •  The children will take their year-end reading assessment on sight words and reading for fluency and comprehension, 
  • The children will write a narrative about their mother.

                                                             First Grade Picnic

The children will enjoy a fun day at the park on Friday.  Parents are invited to come and enjoy fun and help with the children.
  • The children should wear their blue field day shirt.
  • All children should wear tennis shoes.  Please no sandals or flip flops.
  • Children may bring balls and other outside games.  Please no hard balls.
  • All children should bring a snack lunch including a drink.
  • Please put sun screen on your child.  If your child would like to bring sun screen to be reapplied please put your child's name on it.

Week of April 25, 2016

This week the children will be working on the following skills:

  • The children will read words with /au/,/aw/, and /al/ in them
  • The children will read several narrative and identify the problem of the story and the solution
  • The children will continue to work on reading for comprehension and fluency
  • The children will write a thank you 
  • The children will continue to work on understanding numbers and place values of numbers
  • The children will be writing their numbers from 0-200
  • The children will learn about the planets and constellations
  • The children will review the correct formation and spacing of letters
  • The children will continue to work on prefixes and suffixes

Weekly spelling words:  awful, talk, haul, paw, cause, dawn, saw, walk, claw, caught

                            IMPORTANT FIRST GRADE NOTES:

  • Spelling, Reading, and Bible test will be on Thursday due to Field Day on Friday
  • Parents are welcome to come to Field Day
  • All students will be given a t-shirt to wear on Field Day.
  • Students may wear shorts to the knee on Field Day
  • Remember to put sunscreen on your child on Field Day
  • Students should bring a sack lunch on Friday.  Please include a drink.

Week of  April 18, 2016

      On Monday the children will begin taking their achievement test.  I am sure they well prepared for the test and will do well. Please help your child by doing the following.

  • Make sure your child has a good night sleep.
  • Make sure your child has had a good breakfast.  We will give the children a snack doing the test each day.
  • Talk with your child about listening and following direction.
  • It is very important that your child arrives to school on time.  No child will be allowed to enter the classroom once the test has begun

  •    We will continue to review reading and math skill throughout the week.  It may be helpful, if you would review sight words and number facts with your child. 
  • The children will continue to work with learning about motion.
  • The children will begin a unit of study about the solar system
  • Continue to allow your child to read AR books at home.  Remind your child to bring their AR book to school each day.
The children will not have a reading or spelling test this week.  Your child will not have homework this week.

Week of April 11, 2016


  • This week the students will be doing activities to prepare for Grandparent's Day.
  • The children will learn about the variant vowel of /u/.
  • The children will write several narratives about their grandparents.
  • The children will continue to work on editing skills.
  • In math the children will learn about cups, pints, quarts, and gallons
  • The children will continue to work on word problems, graphing skills, and addition/subtraction using two digit numbers.
  • This week the children will read about "The walls of Jericho Fall Down" Joshua 6:1-27
This weeks spelling words:
moon, tune, few, flew, dew, fruit, blew, new, spoon, school
Bonus Words:  addition - subtraction

All first graders should be reading AR books.  First graders should read at least one chapter book a week or 3 smaller books.  Please remind your child to read daily at home and return their AR book to school each day.

If your child will be leaving after Spring Spring please complete the form that was sent home last week.  It is very important for your child's teacher to know who your child will be leaving with

This week the children will work on the following skills:

  • The children will identify, decode, and read words with the /oi/ and /oy/ sound
  • The students will continue to work on reading for fluency and understanding.
  • The children will be introduced prepositions and prepositional phrases
  • The children will learn about" Rahab Helps Two Spies" Joshua 2:1-24
  • The children will continue to work with number sense, addition and subtraction word problems, and fractions
  • The children will continue to work on editing skills
  • The children will write several narratives about their grandparent
  • The students will learn about a world in motion in science
  • The students will learn important information about themselves and be able to write it: Address and phone number,coin      
  • The children will learn their address and how to write their address
