Groundhog Day

Week of January 30, 2017

      Wow! What an awesome week we had last week.  The children did an amazing job in their play on Thursday night.  We are so proud of this.  They enjoyed a great week last week as they prepared for the 100 Days of School celebration.
      This week will be an  extremely busy week.  We will be working on the following skills:


  • Identify, decode, and reading words with the long /o/, /ow/, /oe/, and /oa
  • Read and discuss the Bible story "Moses says " my People Go" Exodus-12:32
  • The children will identify the 10 plagues within the story
  • Continue to work on reading for fluency and understanding
  • Review open syllables within a word (This will help decoding multi-syllable words)
  • Retell and rewrite a story sequence
  • Compare and Contrast stories using a Venn Diagram
  • Review subtraction facts
  • Subtract two digit numbers to find the difference
  • Interpret data on a bar graph
  •  Subtraction two digit word problems
  • Read a thermometer
  • Review great than > and less than< of two digit numbers
  • Discuss Groundhog Day

One Hundred Days of School

       This will be an extremely busy week as we prepare for our first/second grade play and our 100 Days of School celebration.  We will work on the following skills this week.


  • Write several narratives about 100 Days of School
  • Continue to work on reading for fluency and understanding
  • Continue to work on identifying the main idea and main details within a text
  • Review addition facts.
  • Add numbers with two digits 
  • The children will learn how to subtract two digit numbers to find the difference
  • Review other previous learned math skills
  • Work on addition/subtraction drills
  • The children will continue to learn about the life of Moses. Exodus 3:14
                                             Weekly Spelling Words:  
first, one, hundred, days, school, count, number, zero, sum, add
Bonus Words:  celebration  -  subtraction

First/Second Grade Play - 1-26-17  (6:30 P.M. in the high school gym) ( All first graders will need to have a bright colored long sleeve shirt.)  

101 Days of School celebration January 27th  (Children will celebrate 101 days of school throughout the entire school day.)

Week of January 16-20

Don't forget Monday is a school holiday. This week we will be covering the following:

  • Identifying and decoding words with long e sounds including ee, ea
  • Sight words because, blue, into, or, other, and small
  • Correctly using has and have
  • Using capital letters and punctuation correctly
  • Identifying the main idea and key ideas of a story
  • Retelling a story by sequence of events/Putting story elements in sequential order
  • Exploring force and motion
  • Writing a narrative on How to Build a Snowman
  • Continuing to practice addition and subtraction
  • Beginning two digit addition
  • Identifying place value ones and tens
  • The Story God Protects Baby Moses Exodus 2:1-10
This week's Spelling words: we, me, feed, keep, because, beak, seat, sleep, each, green
Bonus words: force, motion

Memory verse: Exodus 2:10 "She called him Moses because he was drawn from the water."

The first and second grade play will be on Thursday,January 26th at 6:30 pm. Your child will need a solid bright colored t-shirt and jeans for the performance.

Be looking for information about our 100 day celebration coming soon. We will be celebrating on Friday, January 27th because of our play practice schedule on the actual 100th day.

Week of January 9, 2017

        We hope all had a fun and safe snow day on Friday.  We look forward to returning back to school on Monday.  We have a lot of things to do and skills to learn.  We will work on the following skills:


  • Continue to work on reading for fluency and understanding.
  • Review identifying cause and effects in reading.
  • Review ABC order
  • Identify words, decode, and read words with /ai/ and /ay/
  • Review compound words.
  • Write narratives about building a snowman and living in a snow-globe.
  • Reviewing handwriting (forming and spacing words)
  • Learn about about Martin Luther King Jr.
  • Continue to learn more about rolling things and why things roll.
  • Review addition/subtraction facts
  • Continue to review place value.
  • Add two digit numbers with no regrouping.
  • Continue to work on editing skills.

       mail, chain, play, rain, way, day, our, carry, train, stay

Reminders:
  • Please make sure your child wear a coat each day.  
  • Your child should read at lease 3 AR books a week or 1 AR chapter book
