Week of December 16, 2019

       Wow! We can't believe that we are at the end of the first semester of first grade.  The children have made good progress.  We encourage you to continue to review sight words, addition number facts, and allow your child to read as much as possible during the winter break.  This week we will continue to complete assessments in math and reading.
        This will be a fun and exciting week for the children.  Please read the following information carefully.
      
CHRISTMAS PARTY
      The Christmas party will be on Monday, December 16th.  The children will enjoy a special breakfast in the Administration Building at 8:30.  Parents are invited to come and help assist with the party.  Please make sure your child brings the item that was checked on the note that was sent home.  If your child is unable to bring the item please contact one of us.  We want to make sure their is enough food for all the children.  All children should bring a bag of wrapped candy for the class Pinata.
       Your child can bring a  special game to play with during the afternoon.  Please no electronic games.

CHRISTMAS STOCKING

       Your child will need to bring items to put in their classmates stockings.  If your child is in Mrs. Martin's class they will need to bring 12 item.  If you are in Mrs. Chandler's class they will need to bring 13 items.  Some suggestions are as followed: (bubbles, crayons, erasers, pencils, small candy bags, small toys, candy canes, etc)  You may get these items at the Dollar Tree or other dollar stores.
Your child will not need to bring a stocking.  They have a Christmas stocking hanging in the classroom with their name on it.

       Your child will need to wear a holiday shirt or E-Z Harding t-shirt and khaki or jeans.

POLAR EXPRESS AND GRINCH DAY
       The children will enjoy some special activities in reading and math.  They will have activities as they review some skills that they have learned this semester.  Your child can wear a Christmas shirt.  Your child will not need to bring anything for this special fun day.
Your child will need to bring a lunch.  Your child cannot charge lunch.

CHUNK -E -CHEESE

       The children will have a special field trip on Wednesday.  The children will go to the public library for some special  activities.  Then your child will go to Chunk -E- Cheese for lunch.  Your child will not need to bring money.  Your child will have pizza, drink, and be given tokens to play games.  Parents are welcome to meet us at the library and have lunch with us at Chunk - E - Cheese.  We will leave the school around 10:15 and arrive back at school around 2:00.
Students will need to wear a uniform shirt and jeans.


PAJAMA DAY  (Half Day - (Students will be dismissed at 11:00)

  • Students should study their Spelling Bee words during the winter break.  The classroom spelling bee will be 1-15-20

Week of December 9, 2019

      This will be a very busy week as we prepare for the K-2 play.  The play will be Thursday, at 6:30.  Your child will need to arrive at 5:30 so they can get their face painted.  Your child should be dress for the play when they arrive.  Mrs. Chandler's class should wear white shirt (no logo) and black pants.  Mrs. Martin's Class should wear black shirts and khaki pants   Your child should bring their clothes to school on Wednesday for the dress rehearsal.
Please make sure that you put your child's name in their clothes.
       This week the children will be working on the following skills:
  • In Bible the children will be working on the "First Christmas".
  • The weekly Bible verse:  She will give birth to a son, and you are to name Him Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins. - Matthew 1:2
  • Weekly Spelling: manger, tree, carol, toy, Santa, reindeer, Jesus, elves, gift, winter -Bonus Words:  Christmas-Celebration
  • Identify the different ways people celebrate the winter holidays throughout the world.
  • Read, retell, and rewrite stories in sequence.
  • The children will begin assessment in reading.  The children will be assessed on sight words, reading with fluency and understanding,
  • The children will work on completing their book that they are writing which will be published.
  • Identify different subtraction strategies
  • Continue reviewing addition strategies
  • Science: Experimenting with states of matter.

       We  are praying that all of our families are enjoying the Thanksgiving break.  We are working on planning  what the children will be doing when they return back to school.  We have a lot of skills that the children will learn and fun activities that they will take part in.
      The children will work on the following skills:
  • Identify, blend, and read words with /u/oo, u sound
  • Identify, read and write contractions with not
  • Put words in alphabetical order by the first letter
  • Retelling and rewriting a story in sequence using a class flow chart
  • Continue to work on reading with fluency and comprehension
  • Write narratives in sequence
  • Continue to work on learning spelling bee words
  • Writing a rough draft for our class book on "Why I am Thankful"
  • Begin a unit of study of winter celebrations 
  • Identify and read the following high-frequency words: after, buy, done, every, soon, work)
  • Identify different subtraction strategies
  • Continue reviewing addition strategies
  • Science: Experimenting with states of matter.

       The children are excited as they prepare for their Thanksgiving feast.  The Thanksgiving feast will be on Friday at 11:00.  The children will not need to bring a lunch.  Parents are invited to come and help assist the children and enjoy a feast with your child.  If you will be coming to assist please let us know.  If you have not signed up to bring something please do so as soon as possible.  You may respond to the email that was sent to you last week or let your child's teacher know.

 GIVING BAGS
This winter we want to enable our students to be the hands and feet of Jesus to our community. Please help us collect the following items  to fill our blessing bags that will be available throughout the winter for EH families to take and give away.  This is a service project that the entire lower school is doing.
In each bag, we want at least one item from each of the following categories:
Something Warm:  Beanies, gloves, or socks
Something to Eat:  Beef Jerky, Granola Bars, or Peanut Butter Crackers.
Something for Self Care:  Mouthwash, hand sanitizer, chapstick, band-aids, deodorant, or tissues (travel size) 
FIRST GRADE SERVICE PROJECT

      This week we will begin the week by learning the importance of observing Veteran's Day.  We will have a special guest speaker to talk with the children.  The children will begin preparing for the first grade Thanksgiving Day feast.  We will send more information home about what you will need to send for the feast.
       The children will work on the following skills. this week:
Math: 
Creating and solving word problems. 
Determining when to add and when to use process elimination.
Mental math strategies (no hands)
Addition strategies boot camp
* adding 10 + a number
* adding 9 + a number
* review doubles plus one and minus one 
(Practice with your kids at home. Randomly quiz them in the car their doubles. ) 
We will be moving on to subtraction the week after. Addition MUST be mastered first.

Identifying, decoding, and reading words with soft /c/, soft /g/, and /dge/

      This week the children will be preparing for their harvest party.  The  party will be on Thursday.  The party will begin at 1:30.  Parents are invited to come and help out.  Please let your child's teacher know if you will be coming.  Your room mother will contact you on what you will need to send to the party.

Wow!

      Wow! The children had a great time at Lucky Land Farm.  We would like to thank all the parents that came to help chaperone the children.  
       This will be another busy week as we prepare for the lower school vocabulary parade.  All children are ask to participate in this event.  The vocabulary parade will be this Friday, October 25th. The parade will begin around 8:15.  Your child should dress as a word.  Your child should have the word and the definition  on the costume or on a piece of  paper attached to the costume.  Parent's are welcome to come.  If you have any questions please contact us.  There are lots of ideas on Pinterest.
