Week of October 29, 2018

       This will be an extremely busy week as the children prepare for our field trip to Walden Farm, fall party, and voting on Friday.  Please continue to talk with your child about listening, following direction, and following classroom and school expectation.  We are working on responsibility in class. . You can help your child by reminding them at home to return their binder, AR book, homework,  and other supplies that they may need in school.
       The children will be going to P.E. and recess outside.  Make sure your child is dressed for the weather.  Please put your child's name in jackets, sweaters, and hoodies.   

FIELD TRIP:
The children will go to Walden Farms on Tuesday.  We will leave the school between 8:15-8:30.  Parents are invited to go.  If you are planning on going on the field trip you must send in your money for the field trip on Monday.  The cost of the field trip is $7.00.  It must be paid in cash.  All children should bring a lunch with a drink.  We will have lunch in our classroom when we return back to school.  All children will need to wear an EH shirt and long jeans to school.  

First/Second Grade Play:

Here is what is needed for their costumes: A PLAIN yellow t-shirt (no writing, design or print-please see attachment, you can find these at places like Hobby Lobby) with either black or orange pants (Girls can choose to wear leggings or tights) We are asking you to send $5 for the costume head piece (Mark envelope for musical). Dark shoes or tennis shoes.  They need their costume for "dress rehearsal/pictures" on November 27th., Tuesday. Please send costume to school that day.  

Fall Party:

The children will enjoy a fall party on Wednesday, October 31st.  The party will begin at 1:15.  The children should bring a special treat to go in their classmates pumpkin and bring the item that you signed up to send for the party.  The children can wear an EH shirt and jeans or fall shirt.

Election:
The children will be learning about the election process, candidates running for the senate and for governor.  They will be voting on Friday.

Fundraising:  
Your child brought home their fundraising information on Friday.  Please encourage your child to sell at least one item.  

 The children will work on the following skills:
  • Identifying, decoding, and reading words with long /a/ silent e
  • Discriminating between long /a/ and short /a/
  • Read, write, and use contractions in their writing.
  • Read, write, and use compound word.
  • Write narratives about fall.
  • Continue to work on learning sight words.  (Child should continue to review sight words at home.
  • Solve word problems on addition, subtraction, and comparing numbers.
  • Learn double addition facts.
  • Continue to work on identifying number families
  • Read, discuss, and write about fall.
  • Learn about the voting process.
  • Continue to learn about map skills.
  • Weekly Spelling Words:  make, take, came, game, gate, late, cake, shake, name, snake      Bonus words:   Halloween -Election
  • Students will read and discuss weekly Bible story "Jacob Tricks Esau" Genesis 25"19-34

Week of October 22, 2018

      This week the children will be quit busy.  The children will be introduced to several new skills in reading and math.  It is very important that your child continue to study their sight words and begin studying their addition facts.  I will be doing assessment in reading this week.  
       The children will work on the following skills:
  • Identifying, decoding, and reading words with /th/, /sh/, and /ng/
  • Identifying and reading words with closed syllables
  • Identify words with 1,2, and 3 syllables
  • Read stories and tell and write the sequence of the story.
  • Continue to work on reading with fluency and understanding
  • Put words in ABC order
  • Read, discuss, and rewrite the weekly Bible story "Isaac Chooses not to Fight" Genesis 26-12:33
  • Read and discuss weekly memory verse: 

          "If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone." Romans 12:
  • Review addition and subtraction 
  • Use a inch ruler to measure
  • Use estimation to estimate length 
  • Identify and write number facts
  • Identify the Earth, direction words, northern and southern hemisphere 
  • Identify the candidate in the the upcoming governor and senator election
  •  Identify a pumpkin from seed to pumpkin

CLASSROOM REMINDERS
  • First/Second Grade Musical:
Here is what is needed for their costumes: A PLAIN yellow t-shirt (no writing, design or print-please see attachment, you can find these at places like Hobby Lobby) with either black or orange pants (Girls can choose to wear leggings or tights) We are asking you to send $5 for the costume head piece (Mark envelope for musical). Dark shoes or tennis shoes.  They need their costume for "dress rehearsal/pictures" on November 27th., Tuesday. Please send costume to school that day.  

  • AR Reading:  All children should read at least 2 AR books each week.  Please remind your child to return their book to school each day.  Your child should return their book to school each day even if they are taking a test.  We D.E.A.R. (drop every, thing and read) and your child can practice reading their book. 
  • It is important that your child arrive to school on time each day
  • Children should dress for the weather.  The children will go to P.E. and recess daily outside.
  • Fall Party:  Please sign up on what your child will bring to the party.

Week of October 15, 2018

      Fall is in the air and the children are excited about doing some really fun things this week.  The children will work on the following skill and doing the following fun activities:
  • Reviewing the short vowel sounds
  • Identifying rhyming words in poems and other text
  • Measuring with an inch ruler
  • Reviewing addition/subtraction number facts
  • Reading the story "Where the Wild Things Are" and doing fun activities along with the story
  • Retelling and rewriting stories about fall
  • Solving addition/subtraction word problems
  • Continue to work on reading for fluency and understanding
  • Continue to work on identifying noun and verbs
  • Read and discuss the weekly Bible story "Abraham's Servant finds a Wife for Isaac"
  • Read and discuss weekly memory verse:   "I'll draw water for your camels too, until they have had enough to drink. Genesis 24:19
  • Identifying and using direction words:  north, south, east, and west

      This will be a busy and fun week.  The children will be preparing for our field trip to the fire station on Friday. Parents are invited to attend the field trip.  We will leave the school around 8:15 and return around 9:30.  The children will be visiting the fire station on Forest View and Murfreesboro Road.  Parents may follow the school bus to the fire station or meet us there.

This week is Spirit Week as we prepare for Homecoming.  The children may wear the following things:
  • :Mon: "I Woke Up Like This"   (Glamour or P.J's)
  • Tues:  Cartoon Character
  • Wed,:  Crazy Socks
  • Thurs: Hat Day
  • Fri.:     Ezell Harding Pride (School Spirit Day)
  • No tank tops or sleeveless shirts

  • No Short skirts or dresses 
  • No Mask 
  • No Face Paint 
  • No Hair Coloring 
  • Students Not Dressed Up, MUST BE IN UNIFORM

  • Read several stories on fire prevention and identify main idea and details within story.
  • Read word with inflectional ending -ing
  • Review possessive nouns,
