Week of January 29, 2020

        This week the children will be preparing for the 100 Days of School celebration.  The children will celebrate 100 Days of School on Wednesday.  Each child should bring a zip lock back with 100 things in it.  Examples ( paper clips, buttons, q-tips, small cotton balls, crayons, beans, etc)  Your child should also bring the item that was written on the note that they brought home on Thursday. It would be helpful, if your child would bring that item on Tuesday. 

      The children will work on the following skills this week:
  • Continue to work on 2 D and 3 D shapes
  • Weather
  • Identifying, decoding, reading, and spelling words with i: y, igh, ie.
  • Identify and use the verbs see/saw when speaking and in their writing.
  • Continue to write narratives and use proofread and edit their writing.
  • Continue to work on reading, retelling, and rewriting stories in sequence,
  • Reviewing cause and effects within a story.
  • Continue to learn about the life of famous African Americans.
  • Write and edit a narrative.
Bible:
  • Read and discuss the story "God Talks to Moses"
  • Read and recite weekly Bible verse:  Exodus 3:14 God said to Moses “I AM WHO I AM”
Spelling:  
  • Weekly spelling words:  find, night, by, kind, right, sight, my, light, nine, dime
Bonus words:  hundred - celebration

First Grade Reminders:
  • 100 Day of School celebration:  Wednesday, January 29th.
  • This week the children will celebrate
    Coming Home 2020.  Your child may wear the following things.  
Monday:  Wear College Gear
Tuesday: Wear your favorite Disney pajamas. (Sleepy Beauty Day)
Wednesday: Dress like your favorite Disney character. (Disney Day)
Thursday:    Dress like a sweet puppy. (100 Dalmatians Day) 
Friday:         Wear your EH Coming home shirt or EH shirt
If your child does not dress up they must wear their school uniform.

Week of January 20, 2020

       This week the children will begin a unit of study of famous African Americans as they prepare for a presentation on February 21nd.  More information will be sent on this presentation later.
      The children will  begin preparing for the 100 Day of school this week.  The 100 Day of school will be next Wednesday, January 29th.  The children will work on activity to get ready for this special day.  Information will be sent home this week of what they will need to bring to school for this celebration.

The children will also work on the following skills:
  • Identify and make 3-D shapes.
  • Identify types of clouds
  • Predicting weather
  • Identifying famous African Americans
  • Write narratives about making a snowman and "If I Lived in a Snow Globe".
  • Identify synonyms
  • Retell and rewriting stories in sequence.
  • Review prefix and use in their writing.
  • Identify, decode and read words with long /o/, o-e, ow, oa,
  • Continue to work on identifying the main idea of a story and key details.
  • Read and discuss the weekly Bible story "God Protects Baby Moses"
  • Read and discuss the weekly Bile verse.  "When I am afraid I will put my trust in you." Psalm 56:3

Week of January 13, 2020How

       It was so glad to see all the children last week.  The children were excited to be back to school.  This week we will be working on reviewing and learning new skills.  Please make sure you review your child's work that they bring home daily. It is important that you sign your child's binder each day.  Please take out all graded papers.   The children will be working on the following skills:
         
           Math:
  • Identify and composing 2-d & 3-d Shapes
  • Word Problems and shapes
           Science: 
  • We will be working on the different seasons that we experience in North American and the types of weather with each season.
  •  How to identify types of weather.
  • How graph and read data while recording types of weather.

              Reading and Language Arts:
  •     Identifying, decoding, and read words with long e: e,ee, ea. 
  •     Retell and rewriting stories in sequence.
  •     Identify and use the words have/had correctly when speaking and writing.
  •     Write using good letter formation and spacing.
  •     Write narratives using good punctuation, spelling, and handwriting.
  •     Continue to work on decoding multi-syllable words
               Weekly Spelling Words:
  •      me, keep, feet, beach, seat, we, she, sheep, jeep, the (Bonus words-freedom - dream)
                 Bible
  • Read and discuss weekly Bible story:  "The People of Israel are Slaves in Egypt".
  • Read, discuss, and recite weekly Bible verse: "I am the Lord Your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery." (Ex 20:2)
                Social Studies:
  •       Discuss the life and accomplishments of Dr.  Martin Luther King Jr.
  •       Begin a unit of study of famous African Americans as we prepare for a special program and
  •       live museum.  More information will be sent home about this later.

Week of January 7, 2020

      Happy New Year!  We hope each of you had a great break.  We are ready to get back to school and get back to work.  We will be reviewing skills and learning lots of new skills this week.
We will work on the following skills this week:
  • Identify, decode, and read words with long a-silent e, /ay/ and /ai/ in them.
  • We will continue to work on reading for comprehension and fluency.
  • Read, retell, and rewrite a story in sequence.
  • Use the verbs was and were correctly in our writing.
  • Write several narratives about our New Year's Resolution and If I lived in a snow-globe.
  • Review previous Bible skills: Identifying the main idea, details within the story and characters in the story.
  • Read and discuss the Bible story "Joseph Helps Pharaoh" Genesis 39:1-41-49
  • Read and recite the weekly Bible verse:   For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.  Jeremiah 29:11
  • Identify the signs of winter.
  • Identify different subtraction strategies
  • Continue reviewing addition strategies
  • Students will have a end of the semester Bible test on Friday.  A review sheet will be sent home,
