Week of February 27, 2017
        The children have been very busy preparing for their African American presentation that will be held this Friday at 8:15 in the Eagle's Nest.
        This week the children will enjoy having guest coming in their class to read stories to them.
        They will be working on the following skills this week:

  • Identifying words and decode words with /ar/ sounds. 
  • Students will read sentences and stories with /ar/ words in them.
  • Students will read stories about Frog and Toad
  • Students will have phonemic drills on reversal and deletion of sounds within a word
  • Read stories from the author Dr. Seuss 
  • Continue to learn how to tell time by the hour and half hour
  • Students will be introduce to fractions:  whole, 1/2, 1/3, and 1/4
  • Continue to review addition and subtraction facts
  • Word problems on lapse time, addition and subtraction
  • Continue to work on reading for fluency when reading, comprehension skills, retelling and rewriting stories that they read
  • Students will be introduce to irregular plurals
Weekly Spelling :  cart, barn, arm, art, yarn, harm, four, star, barn, farm  (Bonus Words:  African Americans
                                                            .CLASSROOM NOTES:
  • All children will participate in the first grade African American Presentation.  Children should come to school dressed as their famous African American.  Your child should bring clothes to change in after the presentation.  The presentation will be at 8;15 in the Eagle's Nest
  • Your child should read books  at home and record on their reading log in their binder.  (This log  sent home on Friday)
  • There will not be a Catapult summer program this summer. 
  • This is Read Across American Week.  Your child may wear the following attire:
Monday:  Pajamas or comfy clothes (no leggings please)
Tuesday:  Green Eggs and Ham Day - Wear green
Wednesday:  Wacky Wednesday -Wear clothes backward, inside out, or mismatched.
Thursday:  Cat In the Hat Day (Wear favorite hat)
Friday:  Fox in Socks Day (Wear silly or mismatched socks)
                   If your chooses not to participate they must wear uniform.

We have been working hard and enjoying this spring-like February weather. The children continue to learn lots about the weather, famous African-Americans, and George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.
Don't forget that Monday is President's Day and a school holiday! Enjoy your day off!

Week of February 13-17
It has been another busy week in first grade. We are continuing to learn about long vowel sounds, Famous African-Americans, dental health, and weather, just to name a few things. 
On Valentine's Day we will share cards and fun with our classmates.

Here is some of what we will be covering in the upcoming week:
  • Reading nonfiction texts
  • Comprehension and fluency
  • Strategies: visualizing, sequence, and identifying main ideas and details
  • Identifying compound words and root words
  • Recognizing and using adverbs telling when
  • Writing using descriptive words
  • Weather and the water cycle
  • Identifying and decoding words with the long e sound spelled with e, y, and ey
  • Measurement and Weight
  • Continuing to practice basic addition and subtraction facts and 2 digit addition and subtraction
  • Famous African-Americans
  • Dental Health
  •  Bible Story: Moses Leads the Children of Israel Out of Egypt
This week's Spelling words: key, bumpy, puppy, funny, penny, sandy, money, sunny, rainy, windy

Sign up sheets for Parent Conferences have been sent home in your child's white binder. Conferences will be on February 23rd from 3-6 pm. Don't forget to send in your sheet to sign up for a time. We look forward to discussing your child's progress with you.

Weather

Weather

     The children enjoyed a great week as they prepared for the Superbowl.  The children continue to work hard as they learn and review many reading and math skills. It is strongly encourage that your child read an AR book daily at home. They will be using AR in the classroom. Your child will be assigned  stories to read and take a quiz on in class.

  • Identify, sort, read words with /i/, /y/, /igh/
  • Learn their address and how to write their address correctly.  (This will be part of their spelling test on Friday
  • Continue to work on reading for fluency and understanding.
  • Retell and rewrite a story in sequence
  • Identify the cause and effect
  • Use the verbs see/saw correctly
  • Add and subtract two digit numbers.  IT IMPORTANT THAT YOUR CHILD WORK ON THEIR AND SUBTRACTION FACTS AT HOME.
  • Add three or more numbers
  • In Bible they will continue to learn about the Ten Plagues
  • Learn about the rain cycle
  • Continue to learn about famous African Americans
Weekly Spelling Words:  find, night, right, fried, by   bonus word:  meteorologist  - address

Your child will write their address as part of their spelling test on Friday.  They will need to know how to write:  entire name, street name and address, city, state, and zip.  ( They may use not any abbreviations)
