Week of  September 2, 2019


         This will be a very busy week since it is a 4 day week.  It is important that you review your child's work daily and sign your child's binder daily.  
       Below are the skills that your child will be working on this week.

Bible 
  •  Cain and Abel 
  • Memory Verse "I will always obey your law forever and ever. I will walk about in freedom. "Psalm 119: 44-45
  • Work in our gardens to show appreciation for God's creation
Math
  •  Number Fluency 
  • Working with a hundreds chart
  • Skip Counting
  • Word problems
  • Place Value 1-99

Reading
  • Reading for fluency and understanding
  • Identifying the main details within a story
  • Identify, decode, and read words with short/o/ 
  • Phonemic Awareness drills
  • Work on listening skills
  • Put words in ABC order
  • Continue to work on learning sight words. This week sight words are (fun, make, they, too)
Social Studies
(The children will begin a unit of study on map skills)

  • Direction words (north, south, east, west)
  • Identify and use symbols on a map.
Science
  • Animal Habitats
Spelling Words:
  • hop    top    log     hog    hot    lot    rock    clock    dot    jog
           Bonus Words:  animal habitat

Library

  • Your child should be bringing home a library book.  Encourage your child to read their library book and return it back to school as soon as they complete it.
  • Your child is responsible for their library book.  Help you child keep up with their library book .  All lost books must be paid for before your child can check out another book.

Week of August 26, 2019

      The children are excited about their upcoming field trip to Cheekwood.  We will be reading fairy tales to the children this week to prepare them for what they will see at Cheekwood. .  
      We have completed assessment in reading and math.  If you would like to talk about how your child did you may contact us to schedule a conference.  It will only take 5 minutes.

       This week the children will work on the following skills:
  • Reading and discuss the weekly Bible Story about Adam and Eve.
  • Our weekly memory verse will be: So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he him; male and female created he them.  Genesis 1:27
  • Identify, decode, and read words with /Ll/ blends.
  • Read for fluency and understanding.
  • Identifying the main idea and details within a story.
  • Discussing the characters and setting of a story.
  • Writing simple sentences. 
  • Continue to work on sight words.  This week our high frequency words are: be, come, good, pull.
  • Place value 1-50
  • Working with hundreds charts,
  • Number fluency
  • Exploring manipulatives
  • Introducing math and literacy centers
  • Identify and discuss animal habitats.
  • Identify community helpers and how they help our community.
  • Continue to write using good letter formation and spacing.
  • Learning about community helpers

REMINDERS:

  • Field trip to Cheekwood  on Wednesday.  Please to read the note that was sent home on Friday carefully if you are planning on attending the field trip

  • All children will have a Bible, Spelling, and Reading Test on Friday. 
  • All children will need to have earphones. (not ear plugs)  Please put your child's name on the earphones and put them in a zip lock bag.
  • Students lunches are $5.00 this year.

Week of August 19, 2019
The children have adjusted well in first grade  Encourage your child to talk about what they are doing in school.  This will allow you to know what they are learning and how they feel about school.  It is strongly suggested that you make sure your child has a good night rest and a nutritious breakfast.
      This week the children will work on the following skills:
  • Identifying, decoding, and reading words with short /i/.
  • Identifying the characters and setting within a story.
  • Identify rhyming words
  • Identify and write telling sentences.
  • Continue to work on writing using good letter formation and spacing.
  • Learn about the role of each family member.
  • Identify the difference between needs and wants
  • Identifying living and non-living animals.
  • Identifying the parts of a plant
  • Identifying and writing numbers 0-20
  • Complete the study of The Creation

Week of August 12, 2019

Welcome to the wonderful world of first grade!  We are very excited to have your child in our class.  The children appears to be adjusted well in first grade.  Below are some skills we will be covering this week in class.  The children will begin changing classes this week.  

  • We will continue to work on learning procedures in first grade.
  • We will talk about what makes each child special.
  • The children will discuss about different kinds of families.
  • Each child will be assessed in reading and math. 
  • The children will work on recognizing rhyming words in poems
  • Identify and read words with the inflectional ending -s
  • .Identify, decode, and read short/a/ words in content
  • Review previous learned math skills
  • Identify and read high frequency words:  does, not, school, what
  • The children will learn about the 7 Days of Creation in Bible.
After your child has been assessed in reading you may schedule a meeting with us to see how well they did and what they need to work on.  We can meet with you before school at 7:15, after school at 3:00, or during our planning time.  It will only take about 5 to 10 minutes.

REMINDERS:
  • All children will need to have some earphones.  Please put your child's name on the earphones and put them in a zip log bag
  • Students lunches are $5.00
  • Our first field trip will be August 28th.  We will be going to Cheekwood.  You will need to pay your activity fee to Ren Web before the field trip.  This fee is $59.00.  This will be for all the field trips we will be attending this year.
  • The children will not change classes until August 19th.
