Week of  April 29, 2019

         This week will be a great week as we will be camping in our classroom.  The tents are up and the children will enjoy some fun reading and math activities.  This will be another busy week as we will be going on a field trip to the Nashville Children's Theater on Wednesday and Field Day on Friday.

Field Trip (Nashville Children's Theater)                               May 1, 2019
The children will leave school around 9:15.  They will see the play "Tuck Everlasting".
Parents will not be able to attend this field trip.  Children should wear their standard school uniform.  Students will have a snack before going to the theater and have lunch when they return.

Field Day                                                                                 May 3, 2019
Parents and friends are invited to attend field day.  A schedule of events will be sent home later from our couches.  Students can wear shorts (to the knee) and a field day shirt.  The field day shirt will be sent home later this week.

Lower School Award Day                                                       May 15th   (8:15 A.M.)

End of the Year First Grade Celebration  (Hawaiian Luau)  May 14th
All parents are invited to come and join in the celebration.  If you are able to come in on May 13th after dismissal to help decorate it will be greatly appreciated.  Just send me a text or email and let me know if you can come and help.  This is always a great time for the children.

Week of April 22, 2019

      This week we will be busy taking care of our strawberry garden.  The children will continue to learn about plants and what plants need survive.  
       The children will work on the following skills.
  • Identify, decode, and read words with /ar/, air/, /are/ and /ear/
  • Identify and use homophones correctly in their writing
  • Identify, read and use high frequency word:  few, gone, surprise, wonder, young, nation, and unite
  • Listening and responding to comprehension question
  • Read, write, count, and illustrate numbers 100-300
  • Review addition/subtraction facts
  • Solve and write addition/subtraction problems 100-200
  • Review Cause/Effect
  • Read and discuss weekly Bible story " Rahab Helps Two Spies"
  • Read for fluency and understanding
  • Write narratives

Week of  April 15, 2019

      The children did a great job last week on their achievement test.  Hopefully we will get the results back before the end of the school year.  The children are glad that it is over and so am I!
       This week we will be back on our regular routine.  However, the weekly test will be Thursday since we are out of school on Friday.       
      The children will have a special Easter luncheon on Thursday.  Therefore, your child will not need to bring a lunch.  I would like for all children to bring 14 filled plastic eggs to pass out to their classmates. The children will  not need to bring a basket to school.  We will have lunch at 11:05.  Parents are welcome to come in an assist.  Please let me know if you will be coming to school to assist on Thursday.  


       The children will work on the following skills this week:
  • Identify, decode, and read words with three blends at the beginning of a word. (/spr/, /str/, and /spl/
  • Identify, read, and use high frequency words in their writing. (before, front, heard, push, tomorrow, your, difficulty, nobody)
  • Identify the problem and solution within a story.
  • Review adjectives and how to use adjectives to compare.
  • Review inflectional endings -ed and -ing
  • Continue to work on listening comprehension skills
  • Read, retell, and write stories in sequence
  •  Read about the Easter Story
  • Identify the parts of a plant.
  • Count and write to 200
  • Continue to review addition/subtraction facts
  • Solve addition/subtraction word problems.

Week of April 8, 2019

       This week the children will be taking the first grade achievement test.  The children have been taught the skills and are ready for the test.  I have reviewed the children on reading and math skills during the past two week.  It is very important that you speak with your child are listening carefully and following directions.  We will be testing Tuesday thru Friday.  Please make sure your child do the following each day:
  • Help your child to have a positive attitude about taking the test.
  • Get a good night sleep.  Your child should be in bed no later than 8:30 during testing.
  • Eat a good nourishing breakfast.  
  • Arrive to school on time.  Your child should be at school by 7:45.  The test will begin at 8:00.  NO CHILD WILL BE ALLOWED TO ENTER THE CLASSROOM ONCE TESTING HAS BEGUN. 
The children will be working on the following skills during the afternoon this week:
  • Reading for fluency and comprehension.
  • Identifying details and main idea in a story.
  • Reviewing addition/subtraction facts.
  • Solving addition/subtraction word problems
  • Finding the missing number in a subtraction problem
  • Addition of two digit numbers with regrouping.
  • The children will learn about the parts of a plant and gardening skills.
