First Grade

       This week will be another busy week as we begin preparing for grandparent's day.  There will be several new skills introduce for the first time this week in reading and math.  Therefore, it is important that you review your child's work daily at home.

Below are some of the skills that the children will be working on this week.

  • Reviewing sight words
  • Identifying and decoding words with the short /o/ sound
  • Continue to work on phonological rhyming
  • Continue to work on phonemic deletion
  • Identify the characters, setting, and main details within a story.
  • Read and discuss the story of Cain and Abel
  • Identify and locate the seven continents on a map
  • Add numbers using with sums of 10 or less using a numberline
  • Solve addition word problems with illustrations
  • Put words in ABC order by first letter
  • Write a narrative about their grandparents
WEEKLY SPELLING WORDS:
 hop, hot, top, lot, sock, log, hog, clock, cost, dot

  • If you are interested in donating a snack for Grandparent's Day please let me know.  Items needed are:  muffins, doughnuts, fruit bowls,/fruit trays, or orange juice.

Week of August 21, 2017

          This will be an exciting week as the children view a total solar eclipse.  Hopefully this will be a day your child will remember for the rest of their lives.  Parents please read the e-mail carefully that Mr. Riley sent you about the activities for the day of August 21st.  The children will be engage in many exciting activities and have a very special lunch.  
       HoThis week the children will also work on the following skills.

  • Children will decode, and read words with the /Ll/ blends in sentences and stories
  • Identify characters, setting, and details within the story
  • Identify and write statements
  • Write using good letter formation and spacing
  • Identify nouns as a person, place, or thing
  • Identify plural nouns
  • Add using touch points with sums 10 or less
  • Read, write, and identify numbers 0-50
  • Interpret data on a graph
  • Solve a word problem
  • Read and identify main details in the story Adam and Eve
  • Begin a unit of study on map skills
  • Continue to review sight words, work on identifying details within a story, and read for fluency

AR
The children are getting use to taking AR test.  Remind your child to bring their book to school each day.  Thanks to the parents that are assisting with helping the children log in to AR.

  • Review all work your child brings home daily.
  • Sign your child's folder each day
  • Remind your child to read their AR book daily at home.  
  • Study sight words as much as possible at home.
  • Open House is Tuesday, August 22nd. 5:00-7:00

Week of August 14, 2017      

       Wow! This is going to be a great week as we prepare for the Total Eclipse.  We will be doing several experiments and other fun activities as we learn about the eclipse.  You will receive more information later about things that will be happening on campus as we prepare for the this great event.

Below are what we will be learning this week in class:


  • Identifying the sound of short /i/ and decode words with short /i/ sound
  • Identify the characters and setting within a story
  • Identify main details within a story
  • The children will begin addition using pictures and adding using touch points
  • We will continue to work with learning sight words and reading fluently
  • The children will begin going to small guided reading groups.
  • Continue to work on class rules and procedures.
  • The children will continue to learn about the creation.  We will have our first Bible test on Friday.
  • The children will interpret information on a graph.
  • The children will continue to write using good letter formation and spacing
  • The children will writing simple sentences.

AR
Your child will be bringing an AR book (Library Book) home daily to read.  Please listen to your child read the book.  Make sure your child can retell main ideas about the story and know the vocabulary in the story.  Your child will take an AR test on the computer the next day.  All children will need to read at least 3 books a week.  I will help your child log in to AR until they get familiar with taking AR test.

     The children have enjoyed the first two days back to school.  They all appear to be adjusting well in first grade.  I look forward to working with your child as well as you this year.  Please remember to keep in contact with me.  You may contact me through e-mail or text.
       I will begin assessing the children on Monday.  I will assess the children on sight words, reading for fluency and understanding, and decoding skills.
       Your child will bring home their binder this week.  Please review all work your child brings home and allow your child to make corrections. It is very important that you sign your child's binder daily.   All binders will have sight words in them.  It is strongly suggested that your child start learning these sight words at home.  We will be working on learning these words at school as well.  PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR CHILD RETURNS THEIR SIGHT WORDS TO SCHOOL IN THEIR BINDER EACH DAY.
        This week the children will be reviewing and working on the following skills:

  • The Bible:  They will learn what the Bible is made up of.  They will learn how many books are in the New Testament and Old Testament.  
  • The children will begin learning about the Creations.
  • Identifying the difference between vowels and consonants
  • Decode and read words with short /a/
  • Read for fluency and understanding
  • Identifying picture clues when reading
  • Identifying sets and number up to 10
  • Identify and write numbers 0-10 with touch points
  • Work on handwriting using good spacing and formation.
  • Write simple stories using a class bubble map.
  • Learn about the sun and stars in the universe.
  • The children will continue to learn class and school expectation and procedures.
HOMEWORK:
  • Monday:   Handwriting worksheet:  Practice writing, name, straight lines, and circle
  • Tuesday:   Read words and sentences with short /a/
  • Wednesday:  Read for fun
  • Thursday:  Math worksheet (touch points)

CLASS REMINDERS:
  • Don't forget to sign up on REMIND on your cell  phone.  Please select the 2017-2018 school year to receive messages from me
  • Your child needs earphones.  Make sure you put your child's name of the earphones.
  • Sign your child's binder daily.  
  • Put your child's lunch money in a envelop with your child's name on it.
