Week of January 2, 2017

       Happy New Year!  We hope you all had a great break.  We are excited to get back to school and get back on a regular routine.  Below are some of the skills the children will be working on this week.

  • Discuss and write New Years Resolutions. 
  • Listen to the story the "After Christmas Tree" and retell and rewrite the story in sequence.
  • Read about winter and the signs of winter
  • Students will take a book walk through a winter book and write details within the story.
  • Students will be introduce to place value up to 100.
  • Students will review addition and subtraction facts.
  • Students will begin addition of two digit numbers.
  • Students will work addition and subtraction word problems
  • Students will begin a STEM unit of study of Rolling things in Motions
  • Students will create a snow globe and write a narrative about living in a snow globe.

Students should study for the first grade spelling bee.  They should study the words that was sent home before the break.  Make sure your child is studying the 2016-2017 word list.

Week of 12-12-16
      This week the children will be doing the following things:

  • The children will continue to be assess in reading and math.  
  • Read the story "Polar Express"
  • Rewrite and retell stories in sequence 
  • Write a letter to Santa Claus
  • Continue to work on learning addition and subtraction number facts
  • Continue to learn about different holidays celebrated during this time of year
The children will not have a spelling or Bible test this week.  

Your child will bring home a list of spelling words that they can study during the holiday for the school spelling bee.  The spelling bee will be in January when they return to school

The children will have a Christmas breakfast Wednesday morning.  Parents are invited to come and assist with the breakfast.  Please check with your child's teacher, if you do not know what your child will need to bring to the breakfast.

The children will be dismissed half day Tuesday thru Friday.

Week of December 5, 2016

        Wow! This is going to be a fun and exciting week as we continue to decorate and get ready for the Christmas holidays.  The children will be working on the following skills.


  • Identify, read and decode words with the /oo/ u sound.
  • Identify and use adjectives in their writing.
  • Write a narrative about Christmas or a holiday that is celebrated during the winter
  • Read the story "Polar Express" and do activities about the story.
  • Identify, read, and use words with inflectional ending -ed and -ing
  • Learn about estimation
  • Continue to work on addition and subtraction number facts
  • Learn about different holidays that are celebrated during the winter
  • Continue to learn about phoneme segmentation of words

  • The children will be going to Chuck E Cheese on Friday.  The children will not need to have any money.  This activity was included in the activity fee at the beginning of the year.  The children will leave school around 10:45. They will eat lunch at Chuck E. Cheese.  They will also be given tokens to play the games.   Parents are invited to attend.  Parents can meet us at Chuck E. Cheese at 11:00.  Parents will need to pay when they arrive at Chuck E Cheese.  Children will need to wear jeans and an Ezell Harding shirt.
  • The first graders will have a Christmas breakfast in their classroom on Wednesday, December 14th.  The party will begin around 9:45.  You will get more information about the Christmas breakfast from your class room mother.  
  • Remind your child to bring in can goods.

  • Retell and rewrite a story in sequence
  • Read for fluency and comprehension

  • Read the story of the "Gingerbread Man" and do several activities 
  • Identify and read words with multi-syllable words
  • Tally numbers to 100
  • Count and write by 2's, 5's, and 10's
  • Continue to review addition and subtraction facts
  • Work addition and subtraction word problem
  • Do several experiments in the STEM lab associated with the story "The Gingerbread Man"
  • Begin a unit of study about winter holidays around the world

  • Write a narrative about the Gingerbread Boy

  • Find the missing numbers in addition and subtraction problems

  • Continue to work on learning addition math facts with sums 10 or less
  • Begin a unit of study on ramps in science
  • Review previous learned Bible stories
  • Identify and read words with multi syllables in poems

THANKSGIVING LUNCH:

P.E. and Recess: 
The children will have P.E. daily.  The children will be going outside on most days.  Therefore, it is important for your children to wear a jacket or sweater.  All children will need to go outside.

       This will be another busy week as we prepare for our Fall Harvest fun day on Friday.  The children will be doing fun activities throughout the day.  The children will have some special treats at 1:45.  Parents are invited to come help and join in on the fun.

       This week the children will learn and review the following skills:
  • The children will continue to work on learning sight words, reading for fluency, and comprehension skills.
  • The children will review the short vowel sounds
  • The children will learn how to identify words with one, two, and three syllables.
  • The children will learn their double number facts
  • The children will learn to add 3 or more addends with sums less than twenty.
  • The children will learn to measure my using an inch ruler and tape measure
  • The children will continue to work addition and subtraction word problems.
  • The children will read the story "Where the Wild Things Are" and do several activities associated with the story.

Week of September 26-30

What a busy week we have just finished!  We had a great time at our Vocabulary Parade today. We learned lots of new words and enjoyed seeing the creative costumes everyone was wearing. It was nice to meet with so many of you this week and talk about your students's progress on Conference day. Next week we are going on our first field trip to Walden Farm.

       This week the children will be very busy as they learn about the legend of Johnny Appleseed.  The children will be tasting things made of apples on Friday,  Therefore, we are asking each child to bring something special made of apples on Friday.  Below are some examples:
apple butter, apple chips, apple bread, apple cookies, apple sauce, and apple candy.  These are just examples.  Your child may bring anything made of apples.

The following skills will be taught this week:
  • The children will read identify, decode, and read words with short /u/.
  • The children will be introduce to contractions
  • Students will continue to work on sight words and learning new vocabulary.
  • Students will continue to work on identifying the main idea and details within a story.
  • The children will continue to work with writing simple sentence.

Week of September 12-16
This week:
  • Students will be reading realistic fiction stories.
  • We will discuss jobs in our communities.
  • We will identify and discuss characters, settings, and events.
  • Students will learn, decode, and identify words with short e.
  • We will learn to use words with the inflectional ending -ed and discuss past tense.
  • We will begin identifying and writing contractions.

  • We will study the story of Abram leaving his home.

Please continue to check and sign your child's planner everyday.
Encourage your child to read his/her AR book to you several times before taking an AR test.

Open House is this Tuesday, September 13 from 5-7 pm. Please plan to visit the classroom to see what your child has been doing. There will be sign up sheets for Parent-Teacher Conferences at Open House. Conferences will be on September 22nd.

The 3rd annual Vocabulary Parade will be on September 23rd. Please check your emails for information on this from the office. It is a very exciting day!

Our first field trip will be on September 29th. We will be traveling to Walden Farms. Be looking for more information to come about this trip.

       The children appears to all have adjusted to first grade and are excited about all the things that they are learning.  This week the children will work on the following skills.

  • Identifying the sound of  short /o/ and read words and sentences with short /o/
  • Read stories and identify the main details and sequence the stories using picture cards
  • Put words in ABC order
  • Identify the continents and oceans
  • add using a number line, touch points, and adding on
  • Work addition word problems
  • Read and discuss weekly Bible story "Noah's Ark"
  • Write using good letter formation and spacing
  • Write a narrative about  "Noah's Ark"

Week of August 22-26

We are settling into our first grade routines and learning expectations and procedures. We have been to all of our Special Area classes and checked out library books. We've done a lot of reviewing and begun learning new things.

This week we will cover the following:
 
We will read stories about pets.
We will read and decode words with -l blends. 
We will continue to identify and write complete sentences.
We will practice sight words.
We will identify nouns and plural nouns.
We will continue to use touch point numbers in addition.
We will make a graph and interpret data from that graph.
We will work on solving word problems.
We will begin working on map skills and cardinal directions,
We will write complete sentences and simple narratives.
We will continue to practice handwriting, focusing on formation and spacing.
We will study the story of Adam and Eve. Test on Friday.

Don't forget our Fundraisers!! First turn in day Monday, August 22. Final turn in on Friday, August 26th. You must have items turned in by the 22nd to qualify for prizes.

The children all appear to be adjusting well into first grade.  They are all excited about learning new things this year.  Please review your child's work that they bring home daily.  Parents should  sign the binder daily.  Allow your child to correct work and complete uncompleted work.

This week the children will be review and learning the following skills.

  • Identifying and decoding words with short /i/
  • Writing simple sentences
  • Review sight words
  • All children will be assessed on sight words, reading for comprehension, and reading for fluency
  • Students will write simple telling sentences
  • The children will be introduce to ABC order
  • Read stories and identify main details with in story
  • Identify their family and how all members within the family are special
  • Count and write to 100
  • Add simple addition problems using touch points
  • Work simple addition word problems

Reminder:
  • All students should bring in a set of headphones for using with their tablets
  • The children will be bringing home a Scholastic order form that they may order books.  You may go on line and order the books.

Week of August 8-12

Welcome to First Grade!

Our first few days of first grade have gone very well. We will continue to work on learning how to be first graders over the next few weeks. We will also be reviewing and assessing what we have already learned.

This week:
  • We will continue learning routines and procedures. 
  • We will get to know our classmates better.
  • We will work on handwriting and correct letter formation.
  • We will be reviewing and practicing the sounds each letter makes.
  • We will begin learning words with short a sounds. 
  • We will identify rhyming words.
  • We will identify and count numbers 1-30.
  • We will begin the study of the Days of Creation from Genesis 1.
  • We will talk about "Me" and begin a narrative about ourselves.
  • We will learn about the summer olympics.
  • We will begin center rotations.
  • We will meet our Specialty teachers and go to Music, Guidance, Computer, Library, and Spanish.
  • We will check out a book from the library.
Spelling and Bible tests will not begin this week. 

If you have not returned the forms from your parent packet, please do so ASAP.

Remember to sign up for the remind app to get texts from the classroom. Instructions for this are in your parent folder.

Please send a pair of headphones for your child to use with the tablets. These will be kept at school.

Can you believe this is our very last full week of first grade?!

  • talk about pollination and parts of a plant

  • discuss the importance of insects
  • talk about an engineering process as applied in the story

  • The children will compare and contrast different version of the story "Jack and the Beanstalk" by using a Venn Diagram"
  • The children will identify and the author's purpose for writing a story.
  • The children will discuss and write about their mothers.
  • The children will continue to review word problems, addition and subtract facts, using tally marks, and interpreting data on a graph.
  • The child will identity the parts and functions of a natural system--the pollination system.
  •  The children will take their year-end reading assessment on sight words and reading for fluency and comprehension, 
  • The children will write a narrative about their mother.

  • All children should bring a snack lunch including a drink.
  • Please put sun screen on your child.  If your child would like to bring sun screen to be reapplied please put your child's name on it.

  • The children will review the correct formation and spacing of letters
  • The children will continue to work on prefixes and suffixes

      On Monday the children will begin taking their achievement test.  I am sure they well prepared for the test and will do well. Please help your child by doing the following.

  • Make sure your child has a good night sleep.
  • Make sure your child has had a good breakfast.  We will give the children a snack doing the test each day.
  • Talk with your child about listening and following direction.
  • It is very important that your child arrives to school on time.  No child will be allowed to enter the classroom once the test has begun

  •    We will continue to review reading and math skill throughout the week.  It may be helpful, if you would review sight words and number facts with your child. 
  • The children will continue to work with learning about motion.
  • The children will begin a unit of study about the solar system
  • Continue to allow your child to read AR books at home.  Remind your child to bring their AR book to school each day.
The children will not have a reading or spelling test this week.  Your child will not have homework this week.

All first graders should be reading AR books.  First graders should read at least one chapter book a week or 3 smaller books.  Please remind your child to read daily at home and return their AR book to school each day.

Happy Spring!

Happy Spring Break! March 7-11

We hope everyone has a safe and relaxing Spring Break. See you in a week!

Week of March 14-18
After Spring Break we will work on the following skills:

  • identifying, decoding, and reading words with /er/,/ur/,/ir/, and /or/
  • identifying and generating rhymes
  • reading to find cause and effect
  • reading stories about the moon and sky
  • identifying money and the value of coins
  • addition and subtraction
  • retelling stories
  • using adjectives in writing


Our Bible story will be Moses and the Ten Commandments from Exodus 19-24.

In Science we will begin exploring Magnets

In Social Studies we will talk about Saint Patrick's Day. For St. Patrick's day fun, we will be having a tasting of green foods. Each child will need to bring in a green food on the 17th to share with the class. Some examples of this would be broccoli, grapes, celery(and dip), limes, kiwi, green apple slices, lettuce, lime jello, lime sherbet, honeydew melon, sour cream and onion potato chips, etc. Your child's teacher will send a reminder about this when we return from break, Send your teacher an email to let her know what green food you plan to send.

Week of February 29, 2016

       This will be a busy and exciting week.  The children will have some fun activities as they read books by Dr. Seuss.  The children will prepare for their chapel presentation that will be held at 8:00 a.m.  All parents are invited to attend.  Your child should dress as their famous African American.  They should wear this to school.  Please send a change of clothes for them to put on after chapel.
       The children will be going to the Discovery Science Museum on Friday.  Parents are welcome to go.  Parents can pay admission to the museum when they get their.  Please let your child's teacher know if you are planning on attending.
The children will be working on the following skills this week:

  • They will identify, decode, and read words in content that has the sound that /ar/ stands for.
  • The children will learn about irregular plural.
  • The children will learn how to identify the plot of the story.
  • They children will continue to retelling and rewriting a story in which they read.
  • The children will learn about how Moses fed the people mana.
  • The children will begin a unit of study on magnets.
  • The children will graph and interpret the data from the graph.
  • The children will learn to count and recognize pennies, nickels, and dimes.
  • The children will write several narratives about the "Cat in the Hat".
  • The children will continue to work on reading fluently and comprehension.

FIRST GRADE CLASSROOM REMINDERS:
  • All students should read an AR book daily.  Your child should return their AR book each day to school,  even if they have not completed reading it.  We have D.E.A.R.  (Drop Everything and Read ) in class each day.  Your child may read their book in class during this time.
  • Your child should complete and return their African American presentation to school by Monday, February 22nd.  We will begin practicing for chapel this week,
  • The children will participate in chapel on March 3rd.  Parents are welcome to attend.
  • Students will go on a field trip to the Discovery Science Museum on March 4th.

Week of February 15, 2016

 This week the children will work on the following skills.  Due to snow days we have a lot to make up.


  • Students will identify, read, and write words with long /i/ spelled i, ie, y, and igh.
  • Student will write stories with long /i/ words spelled i, ie, y, and igh.
  • Students will continue to read stories and identify the main idea, details, purpose.
  • Student will learn about cause and effect within a story.
  • Students will review inflectional ending to verbs.  They will  review verbs, nouns, and .adjectives.
  • Students will continue to learn about famous African American as they prepare for their presentation.  More information will come home this week about their presentation.
  • Students will learn about dental health and the proper way to take care of their tenth.
  • Students will continue to work on reading for fluency and understanding.
  • Students will continue to learn  about Moses and the Red Sea.
  • In math the children will review time.  They will view telling time by the hour and half hour.
  • Children will  review finding the missing addend.
  • Students will write narratives about presidents, and famous African Americans.

We are continuing to work hard! We are almost back to our "normal" routines. We have many exciting things to look forward to in February.
This week we will be working on the following:

  • In Bible we will continue the story of Moses. Our lesson this week will be Moses says"Let my people go!"-Exodus 5-12
  • We will be identifying and decoding words with the long o sound spelled with /oa/, /ow/, and /oe/.
  • Students will work on identifying and writing proper nouns.
  • The children will be writing a narrative, "If I was President".
  • We will begin a study of our country including the flag, the president, and national symbols. This will include Presidents' Day.
  • Our study of the weather will continue with lessons on storms and wind.
  • Our reading unit this week will include stories about animals and how they live.
  • We will be working to improve fluency and comprehension in reading. Don't forget to practice daily at home!
  • In Social Studies this month we will also be talking about famous African Americans. the children will create a booklet in class. Also, be looking for information about a research project coming soon.
  • In Math we will review addition and subtraction facts, measurement, missing addends, and time. We will continue to work on word problems.
  • We will do some Valentine's Day activities and exchange cards on Friday as part of our Fun Friday activities.
  • The School Spelling Bee is scheduled for February 10th.

       Wow!  Last week was a busy week.  Hopefully, we can get back to our regular routine this week.
      This week we will work on the following skills.

  • The weekly Bible Story will be "God Talks to Moses" Exodus 3:1-4:17
  • Comparing and contrasting different versions of the story Cinderella.
  • Identifying, decoding, and reading words with the long /e/ spelled ee, and ea
  • Identifying and reading words with the prefix un, re, and pre
  • We will continue to work on reading for comprehension and fluency.  Please allow your child to practice reading at home daily.
  • Measuring using inch and centimeters
  • Continue to work on addition and subtraction word problems
  • Continue to work on learning addition and subtraction facts
  • Using weight scales to identify how much things weight and which weights the most
  • The children will learn about Groundhog Day
  • The children will learn about the rain cycle and the thermometer
