Week of January 1, 2018

      Happy New Year to all of you.  I hope you had a great break and your child is ready to come back to school.  This will be a short week and we will review school procedures and expectations.
The children will work on the following skills this week:


  • Review school expectations and procedures.
  • Discuss and write New Year's Resolution for 2018
  • Identify and write compound words.
  • Review addition and subtraction facts
  • Count and write numbers by 2's, 10's and 5's..
  • Identify signs of winter.
  • Write narratives about making a snowman an living in a snow-globe.
  • Continue to work on reading for comprehension and reading for fluency.

CLASSROOM REMINDERS:
  • There will not be any spelling words this week due to the short week
  • We will not be a Bible test this week.
  • Your child should dress warmly each day.  Remember if your child will be keeping on their sweater or jacket during the day it must be a EHCS sweater or jacket.

Week of December 11, 2017

       This will be a fun and exciting week.  The children will begin the week with a field trip to the Public Library at the Global Mall and lunch at Chuck-E-Cheese.  Parents are invited to attend.  We will leave the school around 9:30.  The children will need to wear a EZ t-shirt or a holiday shirt.  Your child will not need to bring any money.
        The children will work on the following things this week:

  • Read the story "Polar Express" and do fun activities
  • Continue to learn about different holidays that are celebrated at this time of year
  • Complete their math and reading assessment
  • Read the story of The First Christmas 
  • Compare and Contrast Christmas today and the first Christmas
  • Make holiday crafts
THERE WILL NOT BE A SPELLING, BIBLE, OR READING TEST THIS WEEK.

CLASSROOM REMINDERS:
  • Children will be dismiss at 11:30 Tuesday-Friday
  • Monday:  Field trip to the public library and Chuck-E-Cheese
  • Wednesday:  Class Breakfast (If you did not sign up for something to bring to the breakfast it would be greatly appreciated if you would donate a bag of wrapped candy to go in our class Pinata.  Each child should bring 17 items to go in their friend's Christmas stocking.  Parents are invited to come and assist with the breakfast.  Please let me know if you will be assisting with the breakfast.

Week of December 4th

           This week we will be preparing for our visit to Whitsitt Elementary.  The children will take a gift and refreshment to the students at Whitsitt.  Parents are invited to attend.  If you are planning on going please let me know.
    The children will work on the following skills:

  • Identify, decode, and read words with /u/oo sound
  • Review inflectional endings -ing and -ed
  • Compare and contrast stories
  • Work on improving handwriting by writing using good letter formation and spacing.
  • Read and identify details and the main idea in the story

        This will be a very busy week as we prepare for the holidays.  The children will work on the following skills.

  • Read, discuss, and do activities with this weeks Bible story "Joseph and the Coat of Many Colors".
  • Compare and contrast using a Venn Diagram about Christmas now and Christmas in the past
  • Identify, decode, and read words with the long /u/ and long /o/ silent e
  • Continue to work on reading with good comprehension and fluency
  • Continue to work on decoding multi-syllable words
  • Continue to work on addition/subtraction facts
  • Add numbers with 3 or more addends

  • The children will be introduced to measurement of inches and centimenters

       This will be another short week.  The children will be doing a lot to get ready for their Thanksgiving feast and their visit to the Nashville Children's Theater.
        Below are the skills that we will be working on this week:
  • Identifying, decoding, and reading words with long /i/ silent e words
  • Sequencing stories:  Identifying and writing what happened first, next, then, and finally in a story.
  • Review plurals
  • Read the stories "Squanto and the Indians" and "The Big Yuca Plant". The children will retell and rewrite the stories in sequence.
  • Word Problems (addition and subtractions)
  • Geometry shapes
  • Mixed addition and subtraction facts
  • The children will continue to learn about the Indians and the Pilgrims
  • Write letters to our pen-pals at Whitsitt Elementary.

  The children will take part in the first grade service project.  They will be writing letters to their pen pal beginning this week.  The children will be able to visit their pen-pal's at Whitsitt Elementary on December 7th at 9:00.  I am asking all of the children to donate $3.00.  This will allow the children to purchase books, crayons, and other items for their pen-pal.  Your child may bring this to school next week.  Parents are invited to go with the children to Whitsitt Elementary.  More information will be sent home later.

Week of October 30, 2017

       Wow! This has been a great week.  The children really enjoyed their field trip to the fire station and the fall party.  Thanks to all the parents that joined us at the fire station and came and assisted with the party.
       This week we will begin learning about the first Thanksgiving as we prepare for our Thanksgiving dinner.  This week we will be working on the following skills.

  • We will continue to work on decoding words with multi-syllables.
  • The children will decode, read, and identify words with the long /a/ sound
  • The children will sort words with long and short a sound.
  • The children will begin a unit of study about the Pilgrims and Indians
  • The children will continue to work on addition and subtraction facts
  • The children will learn how to tell time on the hour and the half hour.
  • This week the children will read the story "Jacob Trick Esau" Genesis 25:19-34; 27:1-41
  • The children will use a Venn Digraph and compare and Contrast Esau and Jacob
  • The children will continue to work on learning the books of the Old Testaments
  • I will review contractions with "not"
  • The children will write a narrative about things that they are thankful for.
  • We will continue to work on identifying the main idea in a story, main details within the story, and retell and rewriting a story in sequence.

Week of October 23, 2017                         
        This week will be another busy and fun week.  The children will go to the fire station on Friday and have a fall party when they come back.  All children will have a plastic pumpkin.  ( I have already purchased these plastic pumpkins.)  If you would allow your child to bring something to put in each of their classmates plastic pumpkin it would be appreciated.  Some examples would be a small bag of candy, pencil, toy, etc..  Our room mothers will send a list of items we will need for the party soon. The children will enjoy making crafts on Friday before the party.
  The reading, spelling, and Bible test will be given on Thursday.  
        The children will work on the following skills next week:

  • Identifying, decoding, and reading words with /ch/, /tch/, /wh/, and /ph/
  • Read words with plural es, s
  • Continue to work on reading and sequencing a story.

         This will be a very busy week as we prepare to go to the pumpkin patch.  The children will begin the week by reading and discussing stories about pumpkins and how they grow.  Below are other skills that will be introduced or reviewed this week.

  • Identify words that have closed syllables.
  • Continue to work on understanding the sequence of a story.

  I am looking forward to meeting with all my parents this week for Parent-Teacher's Conference.  If you have not scheduled an appointment please do it as soon as possible.  
   This will be a fun week as the children learn about Johnny Appleseed.  We will have a apple tasting party on Friday.  It would be helpful if all children would donate something made of apple for the children to taste.  Some examples are listed below.
(apple butter, apple cookies, apple chips, apple bread, apple juice, apple pie, apple candy, apple jelly, applesauce, apple cider, apple fritters, etc)  Feel free to send in something else that my not be on the list.

Week of August 14, 2017      

       Wow! This is going to be a great week as we prepare for the Total Eclipse.  We will be doing several experiments and other fun activities as we learn about the eclipse.  You will receive more information later about things that will be happening on campus as we prepare for the this great event.

Below are what we will be learning this week in class:

  • The children will begin addition using pictures and adding using touch points

Your child will be bringing an AR book (Library Book) home daily to read.  Please listen to your child read the book.  Make sure your child can retell main ideas about the story and know the vocabulary in the story.  Your child will take an AR test on the computer the next day.  All children will need to read at least 3 books a week.  I will help your child log in to AR until they get familiar with taking AR test.

     The children have enjoyed the first two days back to school.  They all appear to be adjusting well in first grade.  I look forward to working with your child as well as you this year.  Please remember to keep in contact with me.  You may contact me through e-mail or text.
       I will begin assessing the children on Monday.  I will assess the children on sight words, reading for fluency and understanding, and decoding skills.
       Your child will bring home their binder this week.  Please review all work your child brings home and allow your child to make corrections. It is very important that you sign your child's binder daily.   All binders will have sight words in them.  It is strongly suggested that your child start learning these sight words at home.  We will be working on learning these words at school as well.  PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR CHILD RETURNS THEIR SIGHT WORDS TO SCHOOL IN THEIR BINDER EACH DAY.
        This week the children will be reviewing and working on the following skills:

  • The Bible:  They will learn what the Bible is made up of.  They will learn how many books are in the New Testament and Old Testament.  
  • The children will begin learning about the Creations.
  • Identifying the difference between vowels and consonants
  • Decode and read words with short /a/
  • Read for fluency and understanding
  • Identifying picture clues when reading
  • Identifying sets and number up to 10
  • Identify and write numbers 0-10 with touch points
  • Work on handwriting using good spacing and formation.
  • Write simple stories using a class bubble map.
  • Learn about the sun and stars in the universe.
  • The children will continue to learn class and school expectation and procedures.
HOMEWORK:
  • Monday:   Handwriting worksheet:  Practice writing, name, straight lines, and circle
  • Tuesday:   Read words and sentences with short /a/
  • Wednesday:  Read for fun
  • Thursday:  Math worksheet (touch points)

Week of July 31, 2017

         Welcome to first grade.  I will be posting a weekly blog each week to allow you to know what will be happening in our class,  It will contain what skills I will be covering in each subject,  reminders of upcoming field-trips, homework assignments, and skills that I feel that the children should review at home.

       This week the children will work on getting organized and start learning first grade procedures and expectations.  I will began assessing each child next week on reading skills.  It would be helpful if your child would review their sight words at home regularly.

Can you believe our last full week of first grade is here already?! We have only five full days and four half days left until our summer break! It is such a fun and busy time as we try to wrap up first grade.

This week we will be working on the following:

       We can't believe that the school year is coming to an end.  We still have skills and testing that we would like to do before the end of the year.  It is strongly suggested that you talk to your child to stay focus and do their best each day.

        This week we will be working on the following skills:

  Hooray!  The achievement test is over.  The children did well on their test.  The test results should be in hopefully before school is out.
      This week we will get back to our regular schedule.  The children will work on the following skills.

  • Identify words with silent letters /wr/, /kn/, and /g
  • Identify and understand multiple meaning words
  • Phonemic Awareness Phoneme Substitute
  • Read for fluency and comprehension
  • Continue unit study of the Solar System

Week of April 17, 2017

The children will begin taking the yearly achievement test on Tuesday.  Talk to your child about listening and following directions.  The children have all been reviewed of specific skills and will do great!
It is important that your child do the following each day before coming to school.

  • Arrive to school on time.  NO CHILD WILL BE ALLOWED INTO THE CLASSROOM ONCE THE TEST HAS BEGAN.
  • Eat a good breakfast.
  • Get a good night sleep.
This week the school will not have spelling words or homework.  It would be great if your child will review sight words, math facts, and read for fun.

Ready to run! - Spring Sprint 2017
We had a great time at Spring Sprint today. The children did a wonderful job in our Grandparents Day program this morning. We have been working hard all week for this special day.It was great to see so many parents and grandparents on our campus!
Spring is such a busy time for us here at EHCS.

Week of April 10-14
Students will be working on the following:
  • Identifying and decoding words with the variant vowel sound oo, ui, ew
  • Reading for fluency and comprehension
  • Reviewing story elements
  • Continuing to read and take tests on AR books
  • Writing narratives
  • Learning more about space, planets, stars, etc.
  • Reviewing basic addition and subtraction 
  • Reviewing and correctly using parts of speech
  • Practicing Math concepts
  • Reading and retelling the Story of the Crucifixion
  • Practicing previously learned reading and math in preparation for testing

Next Friday is Good Friday. There will be no school on April 14th and April 17th.

Be sure your child has a good night's rest and a good breakfast every day. Be on time for school and ready to get to work. No child will be admitted into the classroom after testing begins. Tests begin at 8:00. There will be no homework during achievement testing.

We have gotten back into the swing of things in our classrooms. Our first week of the 4th term has started off well. The children have enjoyed sharing their adventures of Spring Break and having some St.Patrick's Day fun.

This week we will cover the following:

On Wednesday (3/22) we will have a special visit from meteorologist Lisa Spencer of Channel 4 News. 

On Friday (3/24) we have our field trip to the Discovery Center in Murfreesboro. Parents are welcome to join us there. You will pay admission at the center. We will leave school promptly at 8:15 am and should return around 1:30 pm. Students need to wear an ezell tshirt, jeans, tennis shoes and appropriate outer wear(if needed). All students must bring a sack lunch. We will be eating at picnic tables at the Discovery Center. Please send utensils and napkins with your child's lunch. Disposable bags please-no lunch boxes.

Spring Spring will be on April, 7th. Please be looking for information about this fun event/fundraiser.

Week of February 27, 2017
        The children have been very busy preparing for their African American presentation that will be held this Friday at 8:15 in the Eagle's Nest.
        This week the children will enjoy having guest coming in their class to read stories to them.
        They will be working on the following skills this week:

  • Identifying words and decode words with /ar/ sounds. 
  • Students will read sentences and stories with /ar/ words in them.
  • Students will read stories about Frog and Toad
  • Students will have phonemic drills on reversal and deletion of sounds within a word
  • Read stories from the author Dr. Seuss 
  • Continue to learn how to tell time by the hour and half hour
  • Students will be introduce to fractions:  whole, 1/2, 1/3, and 1/4

It has been another busy week in first grade. We are continuing to learn about long vowel sounds, Famous African-Americans, dental health, and weather, just to name a few things. 
On Valentine's Day we will share cards and fun with our classmates.

Weather

     The children enjoyed a great week as they prepared for the Superbowl.  The children continue to work hard as they learn and review many reading and math skills. It is strongly encourage that your child read an AR book daily at home. They will be using AR in the classroom. Your child will be assigned  stories to read and take a quiz on in class.

  • Identify, sort, read words with /i/, /y/, /igh/
  • Learn their address and how to write their address correctly.  (This will be part of their spelling test on Friday
  • Continue to work on reading for fluency and understanding.
  • Retell and rewrite a story in sequence
  • Identify the cause and effect
  • Use the verbs see/saw correctly
  • Add and subtract two digit numbers.  IT IMPORTANT THAT YOUR CHILD WORK ON THEIR AND SUBTRACTION FACTS AT HOME.
  • Add three or more numbers
  • In Bible they will continue to learn about the Ten Plagues
  • Learn about the rain cycle
  • Continue to learn about famous African Americans

Your child will write their address as part of their spelling test on Friday.  They will need to know how to write:  entire name, street name and address, city, state, and zip.  ( They may use not any abbreviations)
