Week of April 1, 2019

        This will be a busy week since we have a field trip on Monday and Fun Run (Spring Sprint) on Friday.  Please read this blog carefully there is a lot of information about our week.

FIELD TRIP TO THE DISCOVERY SCIENCE MUSEUM 
        We will be going to the Discovery Science Museum on Monday, April 1st.  Parents are invited to come and chaperone.  If you are planning on going please text me and let me know.  You may pay for your admission when you arrive at the museum.  The bus will leave the school around 9:00.  Your child should wear their Ezell- Harding school uniform shirt, jeans or khakis, and tennis shoes.  ALL children should bring a lunch which includes a drink.   Please put your child's lunch in a bag with their name on it.  NO LUNCH BOXES

FUN RUN (SPRING SPRINT)
  
      Our second annual Fun Run )Spring Sprint and family picnic will be on Friday.  You may order your lunch on line through the link that was sent home earlier this week.  If you have not registered your child for the Fun Run please do so ASAP.  You may click on the link below to register.
The children are excited about the Fun Run and learning about each of the words presented to them that teaches good character.

This week the children will work on the following skills:
  • Identify, decode, and read words in text with silent letters. (kn, gn, and wr)
  • Work on test taking strategies and reviewing math and language skills.
  • Read to identify the author's purpose, identifying main idea, and details within the story.
  • Identify and writing their address (spelling)
  • Read and discuss the weekly Bible story "Moses Send Twelve Spies to the Promise Land"
  • Solve addition/subtraction problem
  • Identify the missing number in a subtraction problem.
  • Retell and rewrite stories in sequence.


SPELLING
       This week your child will need to learn how to correctly write their entire name, entire address, including the city, state, and zip code. ( Your child should not use abbreviation when writing their city and state).  Please spend a few minutes each day going over this.  This will be our spelling for this week.

   I hope each of you had a great spring break.  I would like to thank each of you for the surprise luncheon and the beautiful flowers for my birthday.  I was able to enjoy them throughout the break.  They still look beautiful.
        This will be a busy week as we review for the upcoming achievement test and learn new reading and math skills.  Remind your child to listen careful and follow all classroom skills as we go through the next couple of weeks.
        In math the children will begin counting coins, pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters.  It is strongly suggested that you allow your child to count coins at home for reinforcement.

The children will be working on the following skills:

  • Reading for fluency and understanding.
  • Identifying, decoding, and reading words within text with /au/ and /aw/.
  • Phonemic Awareness Phonemic Categorization
  • This week high frequency words are as follow:  brother, father, friend, love, mother, picture, accept, often.
  • Reading and using possessive pronouns in their writing.
  • Listening skills
  • Counting coins (pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters)
  • Reviewing addition/subtraction facts
  • Work on test taking strategies
  • Work on the three R's (recycle, reuse, and renew)
  • Retelling and rewriting a story in sequence.

Week of March 11, 2019

This will be a fun and exciting week as we prepare for Spring Break and St. Patrick's Day.  However, the children will be introduce to several new skills in reading and math.  Therefore, continue to talk to your child about listening and following directions within the classroom as well as the entire school.
The children will work on the following skills:

  • Identify, decode, and read words with variant vowel sounds
  • Listening skills as the children listen and answer comprehension skills "The Cat's Bell"
  • Review high frequency words: answer, brought, busy, door, enough, eyes, emergency demand.
  • Read and discuss sequence in the story "Click, Clack, Moon, Cow, that Type" and "March on!"
  • Read and discuss about Leprechauns and Ireland
  • Phonemic Awareness Segmentation drills
  • Discuss the moon and the moon phases

The children will celebrate Saint Patrick's Day on Friday.  They will be Tasting of the Green.  Your child brought home Friday what they will need to bring to school by Friday.  The children will do fun activities and view a video about Saint Patrick's Day.

         The month of March will be a very busy week as we prepare for our multicultural presentation and spring break.  The children will have a lot of fun activities this month.  I have been very proud of the entire class this week.  They have worked hard to complete their work and do their best.  Looking forward to another fantastic week.
         The children will work on the following skills this week:
  • Listening comprehension skills
  • Phonemic Awareness substitution
  • Identifying, decoding, and reading words with /ou/ and /ow/
  • Identifying and reading and using the following high frequency words in their writing:  color, early, instead, nothing, oh, through, scrambled, and suddenly

      Wow!  I can't believe March is almost here.  We have a lot to do as we prepare for our yearly achievement test and for the Multi-Culture Program.  It is very important that you continue to allow your child to read daily at home.  Your child should continue to review sight words and addition/subtraction math facts if they do not know them.  If you did not have a conference with me and would like to please contact me and schedule a conference. 

This week we will work on the following skills:

  • Identifying, decoding, and reading words with /ir/,/er/, and /ur/
  • Identify and read high frequency words: another, climb, full, great, poor, through, leaped, and stretch
  • Read word and write words with the inflectional ending -er
  • Work on listening skills and answer comprehension questions.
  • Read and identify the main idea and details within a story.
  • Write narrative about a famous African American
  • Write their autobiography
  • Solve addition/subtraction word problems
  • Review addition/subtraction facts
  • Identify fractions 1/2, 1/3, and 1/4
  • Begin a unit of study on stars and constellations.

        This week the children will be busy working on some new skills.  It is very important that you continue to review addition/subtraction math facts with your child at home.

       This week we will  celebrate Valentine's Day.  The children will have a small party on Thursday from 1:45-2:30.  Each child should make Valentine cards for each of their classmates.  They should also bring something special to go in their classmates Valentine bag.  Some examples are ( pencils, bag of candy, erasers, plastic toys, etc). Your child will not have to bring a bag or Valentine box.  I have gotten these for the children.   • If you would like a conference please contact me as soon as possible. Conference day is February 21st from 3:00-6:00.  However, I can meet for conference any morning at 7:00 or on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday after school.   I am also free to meet with you for a conference during my planning any day from 9:30-10:05.
