       I would like to wish all of you a Happy New Year.  I hope everyone had a good break.  This week the children will review procedures and expectations for the classroom and the entire school.  I will be doing assessment on all students in reading.  I will assess them in decoding skills, reading comprehension, and reading fluency.  Your child should continue to review sight words and math facts daily at home.
        We have been invited to go to the Tennessee State Capitol by Jason Potts. The father of Amalie Potts.  He is a State Representative for District 59.  He has plan an exciting field trip.  The field trip will be on Friday, January 25th.  There will not be a cost for this field trip.  Lunch will be provided.  More information will be sent home as we get closer to the field trip.

AR READING:  
Your child will begin bringing home books to read from the library on Monday, January 7th.  Your child should read at least 3 AR books a week or one chapter book on their reading level.  Your child will receive a reading grade this quarter for reading AR books.  Please help your child remember to bring their AR book  to school each day.  Even if your child does not plan on taking a test they should still bring the book to school each day.  

Your child will be working on the following skills this week:
  • The children will read and retell and rewrite stories about winter.
  • The children will sequence stories that they read
  • The children will discuss and write their New Year Resolution
  • Read and solve addition/subtraction word problems.
  • The children will continue to work on place value and counting and writing to 200.
  • The children will be assessed on reading skills
  • The children will begin a unit on the state of Tennessee in social students
  • The children will begin a unit of study on weather.
  • The children will work on handwriting skills

Week of December 10, 2018

         Wow!  I can't believe the semester is coming to a end.  I feel that the children have all made a lot of improvement.  They are extremely excited about this week.  This will be a different week, since we will have a field trip and two half days.  Please read the information carefully below about the class party and field trip to the library and Chuck E Cheese.

FIELD TRIP:
The children will go on a field trip on Wednesday, December 12th.  Parents are welcome to come.  We will first go to the public library on Bell Road for stories and games.  Then we will go to Chuck-E-Cheese for lunch.(This is a surprise for the children.  (Help me keep it a secret.)  The bus will leave the school at 10:15 and arrive at the library at 10:30.  We will go to Chuck E Cheese around 11:30.  Your child should wear jeans and a EH shirt.  Your child will not need any money to spend.  All children will have pizza, drink, and will receive tokens to play games.

CHRISTMAS PARTY:
Our class will celebrate together by having a Christmas Breakfast on Monday, December 17th at 8:30 am. Parents are asked to donate items for the meal. Please click on the following link to sign up: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/70A0A49AFAD2FA4F85-christmas

In addition, I would like each student to bring in 1 item to contribute to their classmates' stockings and a bag of wrapped candy for the pinata.  There are 12 students in the class.  Our class would like to have a Pinata. If any one would like to donate one to our class it would be great appreciated.  Let me know if you would be donating a pinata,.Parents are invited to come and assist with our breakfast.

This week the children will work on the following skills:
  • The children will continue to learn about how the holidays are celebrated around the world.
  • We will review all the Bible stories we have read this semester.  The children will have a Bible test on Friday.  I will send a study guide on Monday.  
  • The children will continue to work with place value, word problems, and addition/subtraction facts.
  • The children will enjoy having Grinch Day on Tuesday.

Week of November 26, 2018

          I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving.  I would like to thank all of the parents that made our Thanksgiving feast a great success.  The food was fantastic and the children loved having you there.
       This week will be extremely busy as we prepare for the 1st/2nd grade program.  The program will be on Thursday, November 29th.  We will have dress rehearsal on Wednesday, November 28th at 10:15 in the high school gym. Your child will need to bring their shirt for the performance to school for the dress rehearsal. Please put your child's name in their shirt.  Your child will need to be in our classroom by 6:00 dressed for the performance on Thursday.

Here is what is needed for their costumes: A PLAIN yellow t-shirt (no writing, design or print-please see attachment, you can find these at places like Hobby Lobby) with either black or orange pants (Girls can choose to wear leggings or tights) We are asking you to send $5 for the costume head piece (Mark envelope for musical). Dark shoes or tennis shoes.  They need their costume for "dress rehearsal/pictures" on November 27th., Tuesday. Please send costume to school that day.  

       Other than practicing for the performance the children will be working on the following skills:

          This week the children will have a busy week as they prepare for their Thanksgiving Day feast, going to see the Little Mermaid at the Nashville Theater, and practicing for the  1st/2nd grade play.

        This week the children will begin learning about the first Thanksgiving.  They will begin preparing for their Thanksgiving dinner. The first/second grand Thanksgiving feast will be on November 16th at 11:00.  Parents are invited to attend.  Mrs. Wilburn or Mrs. McClard,  our room mothers will be contacting you about what you will need to send for the dinner.  
        This week the children will be working and reviewing on the following skills:
  • Identifying, decoding, and reading words with long /i/ silent e
  • Identify the characters and setting within a story
  • We will continue to work on learning sight words and addition/subtraction number facts
  • Retell and rewrite a story in sequence
  • Review addition doubles

       This will be an extremely busy week as the children prepare for our field trip to Walden Farm, fall party, and voting on Friday.  Please continue to talk with your child about listening, following direction, and following classroom and school expectation.  We are working on responsibility in class. . You can help your child by reminding them at home to return their binder, AR book, homework,  and other supplies that they may need in school.
       The children will be going to P.E. and recess outside.  Make sure your child is dressed for the weather.  Please put your child's name in jackets, sweaters, and hoodies.   

FIELD TRIP:
The children will go to Walden Farms on Tuesday.  We will leave the school between 8:15-8:30.  Parents are invited to go.  If you are planning on going on the field trip you must send in your money for the field trip on Monday.  The cost of the field trip is $7.00.  It must be paid in cash.  All children should bring a lunch with a drink.  We will have lunch in our classroom when we return back to school.  All children will need to wear an EH shirt and long jeans to school.  

First/Second Grade Play:

The children will be learning about the election process, candidates running for the senate and for governor.  They will be voting on Friday.

Fundraising:  
Your child brought home their fundraising information on Friday.  Please encourage your child to sell at least one item.

      This week the children will be quit busy.  The children will be introduced to several new skills in reading and math.  It is very important that your child continue to study their sight words and begin studying their addition facts.  I will be doing assessment in reading this week.  
       The children will work on the following skills:
  • Identifying, decoding, and reading words with /th/, /sh/, and /ng/
  • Identifying and reading words with closed syllables
  • Identify words with 1,2, and 3 syllables
  • Read stories and tell and write the sequence of the story.
  • Continue to work on reading with fluency and understanding

      This will be a busy and fun week.  The children will be preparing for our field trip to the fire station on Friday. Parents are invited to attend the field trip.  We will leave the school around 8:15 and return around 9:30.  The children will be visiting the fire station on Forest View and Murfreesboro Road.  Parents may follow the school bus to the fire station or meet us there.

Week of September 10, 2018

         This week the children will be preparing for Grandparent's Day.  Grandparent's Day will be Friday, September 14th.  All grandparents, parents, aunts, and other special friends are invited.  Your child may leave school after the program with their grandparents.  However, you must complete the form that was sent home last Thursday.  If your child will be staying at school for the remaining of the day please send me the form back letting me know this.  Your child will be doing activities in extended day.  If your child will be staying in extended day they will need to bring a lunch. 

Parent/Teacher's Conference will be September 18th from 3:00-7:00.  I would like to have a conference with all parents.  I will  also be able to have a conference with you any morning before school, during my planning at 9:30,  or after school.  Please complete the Parent/Teacher's form that your child brings home on Monday.

        This week the children will be working on the following skills:
  • Reviewing short vowel sounds
  • Identifying nouns and possessive nouns
  • Identifying, decoding, and reading words with r blends
  • Reviewing sight words
  • Weekly Bible Story "Noah's Ark"
  • Weekly Memory Verse: Noah did according to all that the LORD had commanded him.
  • Addition by adding on (Students will use unifix cubes to practice adding on)
  • Solve and illustrate addition problems
  • Write a narrative about grandparents using a class bubble map.
  • Continue to practice writing letters, words, and sentences using good letter formation and spacing.
  • Identify details, setting, and characters within a text
  • Practice reading for fluency and comprehension.
  • Use pictures and diagrams to understand text that they read.

Week of September 3, 2018

     Again we have another 4 day week!  Therefore, another busy week!  The children are all adjusting well in first grade and appear to be enjoying it.  We will continue to work on learning school and classroom procedures and expectations. It is very important that you review your child's binder daily and remove all graded papers.  It would be helpful,  if you would allow your child to complete any uncompleted work and return to school.   Please leave sight words in the binder.  We go over our sight words regularly at school.
       The children will work on the following skills this week:

  • Read and discuss detail and main idea in weekly Bible Story "Cain and Abel"
  • Read and discuss the meaning of the weekly memory verse: "I am the good shepherd.  The good shepherd gives his life for the sheep." John 10:11
  • Identify, decode, and read words with the short /o/
  • Discriminate between the short /a/, /i/, and /o/ sounds
  • Generate and identify rhyming words in reading
  • Continue to work on learning sight words, reading for fluency, and reading comprehension
  • Retell and Sequence a story
  • Identify details within a story 
  • Retell and rewrite a story naming details within the story.
  • Write a narrative about themselves
  • Add by adding on
  • Solving addition word problems
  • Reviewing touch points
  • Add in any order
  • Continue to learn about the 5 senses (smell, hearing, and seeing)
  • Learn about Friendship and how to be a good friend.
WEEKLY SPELLING WORDS:

Your child will bring a list of spelling words home on Tuesday.  They should write each spelling word 3 times. (This will be their homework for Tuesday) The children should make sure that they did not write any letter backward when writing the word.  Allow your child a few minutes each day to review the spelling words. Your child will have one dictation sentence on the spelling test on Friday,  They should make sure that they begin the sentence with a capital letter and use a period at the end of the sentence.  Your child will have two bonus words on the spelling test.

Week of August 27, 2018

       This will be a very busy week, since we may be out of school on Friday.  I will let you know if we are out of school as soon as I find out.  The children will be working on the following skills this week:

  • Reading for fluency and comprehension
  • Reviewing sight words
  • Identifying, decoding, and reading words with the L blend  (cl, sl, bl,gl,)
  • Reviewing short /i/ and short /a/
  • Identifying the five senses
  • Sequence stories
  • Identifying details within a story
  • Counting and writing numbers 1-100
  • Addition word problems
  • Using touch points to add simple addition
  • Bible story "Adam and Eve Disobeyed God"
  • Memory Verse:  The Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living being. Genesis 2:7  
CLASSROOM NOTES:
  • Students will have their first Bible test this week.  The study sheet will be sent home on Thursday.
  • Children may be out of school on Friday if 60% of the students participated in the fundraiser.
  • Please review your child's work and sign their binder daily.
  • Continue to review sight words with your child daily.

Week of August 20, 2018

       The children are enjoying first grade.  They are adjusting well in first grade and eager to learn. This is going to be a fantastic year. Please continue to talk with your child about listening and following directions from all teachers and staff at school. 
       I have completed assessing the children on reading skills.  If you would like to schedule a conference feel free to text me through the REMIND App and schedule a conference.
       The children will be working on the following skills this week:

  • Reading and discuss the Bible story of the "Creation."
  • This week memory verse will be Genesis 1.
  • The children will identify, decode, and read words with short /i/.
  • The children will begin identifying details, characters, and setting within a text.
  • The children will identify word order in a sentence.
  • The children will write simple sentences using a class bubble map.
  • The children will begin to go to literacy centers and work on specific skills.
  • The children will begin guided reading groups.
  • The children will learn about what a family is and the importance of their family.
  • Count and write numbers 0-50
  • Continue to identify numbers 1-9 and how to use touch points 
  • The children will be introduce to addition
  • The children will use illustration and touch points to add simple addition problems
  • The children will continue to work on identifying rhyming words.
       CLASSROOM REMINDERS:
  • Please continue to go over your child's sight words daily at home.
  • It is important that you review all work your child brings home daily in their binder and sign your child binder.
  • If you have not connected with the Remind app please do so ASAP.  Directions was sent home in the orange folder that you received at the Meet and Great Meeting.
  • Your child will bring home their Read for Fun Bag on Wednesday.  Please remind your child to return the bag and book to school on Thursday.
STEM LAB:
The children enjoyed going to the STEM LAB on Friday.  They had to work as a team and build a tower using spaghetti and marshmallows.

        The children are all adjusting well in first grade.  They had a great time learning about themselves and what they will be learning and during in first grade.  I am looking forward to a fantastic year.

       The children are still learning classroom and school procedures and expectations.  Please continue to speak with your child about listening carefully and following directions.

This week the children will work on the following skills:


  • Continue to work on classroom and school expectations and procedures.
  • Have a unit of study about the family and themselves.
  • Write about School using a classroom bubble map.
  • Write about their family using a classroom bubble map.
  • Identify words that rhyme
  • Identify, decode, and read words with short a.
  • Identify,count and write numbers 0-20
  • Identify and write numbers 1-10 using touch points
  • Graphing and interpreting data
  • Review color and number words
  • Write letters and simple sentences using good letter formation and spacing.
  • Use Google map to locate their school
  • Identify the parts of the Bible and the Books of the Bible.
       I will be doing reading assessment this week on each child.  It is strongly suggested that you would begin reviewing sight words with your child daily at home.  Sight words list was put in your child's binder.  I will schedule a short conference with each parent when I have completed your child's assessment.

Week of May 14, 2018

       This week the children will continue to work on their first grade memory book. They will continue to  learn about Hawaii as they prepare for their Hawaiian Luau on Thursday.  Information will come home on Monday letting you know what your child will need to bring to the Luau.  All parents are invited to attend. We will begin around 8:30 in the lunchroom.  This will be the children's end of the year celebration.  I will decorate the lunchroom on Wednesday after dismissal.  If you would like to join me I would really appreciate it.

       Award's Day will be on Wednesday, May 16th.  Parents are all invited to join us in the middle school  gym at 9:15.

       Well, this will be the final blog for first grade.  This has been a great  year.  The children have learned so much and I am very proud of each of them.  I know they will each do well in second grade.  Please continue to keep in contact with me throughout the years.  I hope you all will  have a fun and safe summer.
