Week of January 4, 2016

       Happy New Year to all!  Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday.  We are so glad to be back in school.  We have missed each one of our students.
      This week we will be working on the following skills:

  • Reading words with long  /o/ and /u/ vowels with CVCe
  • Comparing and contrasting things from the past and now as the children read the following story: "Long Ago and Now" and "From Horse to Plane"
  • Read and discuss poems for winter
  • Discuss and write New Year Resolutions
  • Add and subtract two digit numbers
  • Work word problems with two digit numbers
  • Identifying and reading compound words
  • Begin a unit of study on weather
  • Write a narrative about living in a snow-globe

Week of December 14, 2015
This week the children will do the following things:

  • Learn about the First Christmas and other ways people celebrate the holiday around the world
  • Continue to work on addition of two digit numbers 
  • The children will have a special story read from Coach Riley
  • The children will make special gifts for some special people
  • Write a letter to Santa
  • They will view a special movie on Friday 
REMINDERS:

  • All children should bring in a long sleeve white t-shirt for the First Grade Play in January
  • The First Grade Play will be on January 28, 2016
  • If you are able to come in and help with decoration please let your child's teacher know before the holiday.  We will begin making the decoration after the holidays.
  • All children should bring in a book to exchange at our party.  Please wrap the book
  • The children will have their Christmas party on Thursday morning.  Parents are welcome to attend.
  • There will not be a spelling test this week.
  • The children can wear their pajamas to school on Friday.

  • This week the children will be assessed on sight words, reading for fluency and understanding, and decoding word.
  • The children will read the story "Polar Express" and learn and review many reading and math skills while enjoying the story.
  • The children will continue to work on retell and rewriting storing in sequence.
  • The children will continue to work on addition and subtraction math facts.
  • The children will continue to work with place value and adding numbers with two digits.
  • The children will learn about estimation and interpreting data on a graph
  • The children will review previous Bible Stories

CLASSROOM REMINDERS:

  • All children will need to bring in a long sleeve white tee-shirt to be used in the first/second grade play.

  • The children will be going to Chuck-E-Cheese on Friday December 11th.  The children will leave school around 10:30.  Parents are invited to meet us at Chuck-E-Cheese.
  • All children should be a book for exchange by Tuesday, December 11th.
  • Our Christmas party will be Thursday morning.  We will have a breakfast.
  • There will not be any AR due to the book fair.  If your child has a book out please return it as soon as possible.
  • Your child may shop at the book fair during the week.

Week of September 28-October 2


             

Week of September 28th - October 2nd

We are continuing to learn and do new things.

  • This week we will continue to work on phonemic awareness and decoding cvc words with short vowel sounds. We will be working on end blends-(nd, -st, -nk, -nt). Children will learn words in the -end and -ast word families.
  • In Reading we will read and discuss stories about communities in nature. We will continue to identify key details and story elements.
  • Please continue to work on sight words.  It is very important to study these regularly. Recognition of these words is vital to becoming a good reader.
  • In Math we will began working on greater then and less than. We will be reviewing and reinforcing addition and subtraction skills. We will also continue to solve simple word problems.
  • In Language Arts we will write a narrative on fire safety. We will continue to practice identifying and using singular and plural nouns. This week we will introduce verbs.
  • As October approaches, we will begin a unit on fire prevention and safety in Social Studies. In Science we will continue to learn about living things.
  • Our Bible lesson this week will be about Abraham traveling to a new home. (Genesis 12)

Week of September 14-18

 
                                               
What a busy time in first grade! 

  • This week we will continue to work on reading and decoding words and practicing sight words. The children will continue reading to develop fluency and understanding. We will also continue working on ABC order. The children will analyze key details and make predictions about the text. They will decode and identify words with short e.
  • In Language, the children will be identifying and using nouns correctly. We will continue to write complete sentences using capital letters and punctuation. We will work on writing simple narratives.
  • Handwriting will be practicing letter formation and spacing. We will continue to work on neatness and legibility. 
  • In Math the children will continue to work on subtraction, including word problems. We will be introduced to more graphing this week as well.
  • In Science, we will continue our discussion of living/ nonliving things and introduce parts of a plant and their functions. The children will participate in a hands-on activity in the STEM lab on Friday.
  • In Social Studies we will begin a study of Johnny Appleseed. We will incorporate many different activities into this unit of study over the next few weeks.
  • In Bible we will learn the story of Noah Building The Ark.


Our memory verse for this week is Genesis 6:22 "Noah did all that God commanded him to do."

Week of September 7-11
  • This week we will continue to work on ABC order and recognizing sights words. The children will identify and decode words with s and r blends. We will continue analyzing key details and asking questions about the text. 
  • In Language we will write several personal narratives. We will talk about possessive nouns.
  • In Handwriting we will continue to work on using good letter formation and spacing.   
  • In Bible, our story will be about Cain and Abel. Our memory verse will be Matthew 22:39, "Love your neighbor as yourself."
  • In Math we will be introduced to subtraction. We will continue to do addition and subtraction problems, including word problems. The children will count and write to 100.

Week of August 31, 2015

    This week the children will continue to work on learning sight words.  They will learn about the short/o/ sound.  The children will decode words, read words, and write words with the short /o/ sound.  In language they will begin learning ABC order.  They will continue to work on writing simple sentences, identifying asking and telling sentences, and recognizing and sorting nouns.
    In writing the children will continue to work on writing using correct letter formation and spacing.  They will be writing a  narrative about their friends.
      In math the children will continue to work simple addition word problems.  They will be introduce to addition using the number line.
      In science the children will continue to work on colors.  They will be going to the Stem Lab on Friday.

Week of August 24, 2015

      This week the children will learn about /Ll/ blends.  They will be decoding words with /Ll/ blends and reading stories with /Ll/ blends in them.  The children will continue to work on learning sight words.  They will be working on identifying the main details and main details in the stories they read.  The children will begin to learn to read fluently.  They will continue to decode words with  short /a/ and short /i/ vowel sounds.
       In language the children will learn what a noun is.  They will be sorting nouns according to people, places, things, and animals and identifying nouns in sentences.  They will begin learning how to make nouns plural.   The children will continue to learn about telling and asking sentences.  They will write sentences about the creation.  The children will begin to write in their journals.
       In Bible your child will continue to learn about the creation.  They will continue to make a booklet about the creation.  Your child will be writing a narrative about what they have learned about the creation.  They  will have a test on the creation on Friday.  A study sheet will come home on Thursday.  This week memory verse is "God created the Heaven and Earth". They will be ask to recite the memory verse on Friday.
       In math the children will continue to work on addition.  They will be adding by using the strategies of adding on and using touch points.  They will continue to learn to work addition word problems. Your child will continue to work on counting and writing numbers to 120.
       This week's spelling words will have the /Ll/ blends in them.  Your child will have a dictation sentence to write along with their spelling words.

 Wow!  The children are really adjusting in first grade.  They are very excited about being back in school.  We have had a very busy week.
       Next week we will be learning about the short /i/ sound.  We will read stories with short /i/ words and practice decoding  words with short /i/. The children will be working on their tablets to practice decoding words.  The children will work on identifying  the main idea in stories and main details in stories.  
       In math the children will begin addition.  They will learn how to use touch points to add. The children will learn to make illustration to represent the addition problem.  
     In writing the children will continue to work on learn how to write using good letter formation and spacing.
      In language the children will learn the difference between a telling sentence and a asking sentence. They will practice writing simple telling and asking sentence.  Your child will be writing a narrative about the Bible and themselves.
      In Bible the children will begin learning about the creation.  They will be making a booklet to illustrate how God created the world in seven days.   There will not be a Bible test next week.
       In social studies the children will continue to talk about school and themselves.

The Beginning of a Fantastic Year in First Grade

        Welcome to first grade.  We are very excited about the upcoming year.  The children appear to be adjusting well in first grade.
       This week the children will continue to learn procedures and expectations of a first grader.  We will be assessing all students on reading and math skills.  It would be very helpful, if all students will begin to study their sight words that are in the daily binder.
      In math, the children will review numbers from 1 to 20.  In social studies, the children will continue to learn about what makes each of them special. In Bible they will begin learning the books of the Old Testament.  Your child will make a special Bible to help him/her  better understand the parts of the Bible.


HOMEWORK:

  • Monday- Practice writing straight lines and circles on tablet paper and study sight words.
  • Tuesday- Practice writing first name on tablet paper and study sight words
  • Wednesday- Read for fun and study sight words.
  • Thursday- Write numbers 1 through 5 using touch points and study sight words.
  • Friday- Study sight words and read for fun.
